Lesson 5: The Dependent and

Independent Variables
Independent & Dependent Variables
 Independent variable is the variable that can be
controlled. It is assume to have a direct effect on the
dependent variable.

 Dependent variable is the variable being tested or


measured. Its value may change according to the independent
variables.
Example:

A science students wants to know the amount of sunlight


needed for the growth of the specific plant.

Independent : amount of sunlight exposed to the plant


Dependent : growth of the specific plant.
Determine the independent and dependent
variable given the following situations

Examples:
1. A psychology students wants to know if the emotional quotient of a student affects
his/her performance in a Math test.
Independent: emotional quotient of a student
Dependent:. performance in a Math test.
2. A scientist studies the impact of Drug A on a
cancer cells.
Independent: usage of drag A
Dependent: impact of drag to the cancer cells
3. A pathologiststudies the reaction of Salmonella
bacteria to a new antibiotic developed.
Independent: use of new antibiotic developed
Dependent: the reaction of Salmonella bacteria
Assignment:
• Concept note no. 5 The dependent and Independent Variables
• Activity no.4 : Give five situations and try to determine the
independent and dependent variable, then give short explanation
about the chosen independent and dependent variables.
• Review the lesson 1 to 5 for quiz no. 1 on Wednesday (September
15, 2021)
