IDENTIFYING INDEPENDENT

AND DEPENDENT
VARIABLES
Statistics and Probability (4th Quarter - Week 7)

Senior High School

REVIEW
Regression Analysis
 A statistical treatment of data which
involves identifying the relationship
between a dependent and one or
more independent variables.
Uses of Regression Analysis

1. Determine the strength of the

predictors; identifying the strength of
the effect that the independent
variable(s) have on a dependent
variable.
Uses of Regression Analysis

2. Forecast effects or impact of

changes; understanding how much
the dependent variable changes with
a change in one or more independent
variables; and
Uses of Regression Analysis

3. Predict trends and future values;

getting a point estimate.
LINEAR REGRESSION
The basic and commonly used
regression analysis
 Used to explain the relationship
between one dependent variable and
one or more independent variables
Simple Linear Regression
 It is a linear regression model with
two-dimensional sample points, one
dependent variable and one
independent variable
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
 A variable that is hypothesized to
have an impact on the dependent
variable, can be manipulated or
changed, and usually denoted by X.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE
 A variable that is being tested, its
value relies or depends on the value
of the independent variable and
usually denoted by Y.
Independent and Dependent Variable

“ (Dependent Variable) depends upon (Independent Variable)”

Examples: Identify the independent and dependent
variables in the following situations.

1. A teacher wants to know the effect of attendance

on the academic performance of the students.
2. A scientist conducts an experiment to test that
vitamin C could improve a person’s immune
system.
3. An educational researcher tests the effect of
student’s number of study hours on his/her test
Example 1
 A teacher wants to know the effect of
attendance on the academic performance
of the students.
“Academic performance depends upon the
attendance of the students. “
“The attendance depends upon the academic
performance of the students.”
Example 2
 A scientist conducts an experiment to test
that vitamin C could improve a person’s
immune system.
“Improved immune system depends upon the in-
take of vitamin C.“
“The in-take of vitamin C depends upon the
improved immune system”
Example 3
 An educational researcher tests the effect
of student’s number of study hours on
his/her test scores
“The number of study hours depends upon the
test score of the student.“
“Test score depends upon the number of study
hours of the student”
Practice Exercise

1. The speed used and the distance travelled by a car.

 INDEPENDENT VARIABLE

2. Number of packs of bread and the amount of money

spent on buying the bread.
 DEPENDENT
VARIABLE
3. Side and area of a regular polygon.
 INDEPENDENT
VARIABLE
4. The amount of gasoline (in liter) purchased and the
total amount paid (in peso) for the gasoline.
 DEPENDENT
VARIABLE
Identify the independent and dependent
variables in the following pair of variables:

1. Daily rate and monthly salary of a worker

2. The amount of water consumption (in cubic
meter) and the amount paid (in pesos) every
month.
3. Number of ne COVID-19 cases per day and
the total number of COVID-19 cases in
Tarlac.
4. Dimension (length and width) and area of a
rectangular lot.
Answers:
INDEPENDENT
DEPENDENT VARIABLE
VARIABLE

1 Daily rate Monthly Salary

Amount of water Amount paid for the water

2
consumption consumption
Number of new COVID-19 Total number of COVID-19
3
cases cases

 A variable that is being tested, its value
relies or depends on the value of the
independent variable and usually denoted
by Y.

 DEPENDENT VARIABLE
To identify which of the two variables is dependent or
independent:

 Place each variable in the blank found in the

statement,
Dependent Variable Independent Variable
“_____________ depends upon _____________”

 Evaluate whether the statement is logical
