Review Question

Why do we have to get a sample from a

population?
Sampling Distribution of
sample means

is a frequency distribution using the means

computed from all possible random
samples of a specific size taken from a
population
Sampling Distribution

After conducting the vaccine research, the

population consists of the numbers 6, 7, 9, and
11. Let us list all possible samples of size n
from this population and compute the sample
mean.

Given: Population = 6, 7, 9, 11
Sample mean and standard deviation
Let us list all possible samples of size 2 from this
population and compute for the and .
Population
6 6 6 6 7 7 7 9 9 11
6 7 9 11 7 9 11 9 11 11
6 6.5 7.5 8.5 7 8 9 9 10 11
Show that the sample statistics can generalize the entire population by
showing that the population mean is equal to the mean of the sample
means.

Central Limit Theorem

• If random samples of size n are drawn from a population, then as n becomes

larger, the sampling distribution of the means approaches the normal
distribution, regardless of the shape of the population distribution.

Distribution

Observe that as the sample size increases, the sampling

distribution of the sample mean approaches a normal
distribution even if the population from which the
samples are drawn is not normally distributed.
