Human Impacts on the

Environment

PRESENTED BY: GROUP 5

Background Information:

Human impacts on the environment includes changes to

biophysical environments and ecosystems, biodiversity,
and natural resources caused directly or indirectly by
humans. We rely on ecosystems to supply food and other
necessities for a healthy human life. However, certain
human activities have had a devastating impact on
ecosystems. The biggest ones can be remembered by
using the acronym H.I.P.P.O
HABITAT LOSS
• refers to the reduction of the amount of space where a particular species, or group of species can survive
and reproduce.
FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO HABITAT LOSS

• INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES - such as agriculture, aquaculture, mining, water extraction.

• URBAN SPRAWL - the spread of city into the area surrounding it without planning.
• DEFORESTATION - the cutting down of trees in a large area, or the destruction of forests by people.
INVASIVE SPECIES
• Organisms that is not indigenous, or native, to a particular area. Invasive species
can cause great economic and environmental harm to an area.

Lionfish Emerald Ash Borer Zebra Mussel Kudzu

POLLUTION
• It is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials
are called pollutants.
• When harmful substances contaminate the environment, it is called pollution.

THREE MAJOR TYPES OF
POLLUTION

Air Pollution
• The presence of one or more contaminants in the atmosphere which
are harmful to human beings, plants, and animals.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO AIR POLLUTION

• Burning fossil fuels, coal and natural gas.
• Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons produced by cars and
factories.

Water Pollution
• The contamination of water bodies and it occurs when pollutants are directly
or indirectly discharged into water bodies without enough treatment to get rid
of harmful compounds.
FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO WATER POLLUTION
• Natural waste
• Solid waste
• Industrial waste
• Oil Industry
• Mining sources, etc

THREE MAJOR TYPES OF
POLLUTION
Land Pollution
• Introduction of contaminants into the environment and the degradation of
the Earth’s surface caused by an abuse of resources and improper disposal of
waste

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO WATER POLLUTION

• Nuclear waste
• Agriculture
• Landfills
• Littering
• Construction

LAND POLLUTION
POPULATION
• Group of organisms of the same species that live in specific area and interbreed.
OVERHARVESTING
• Sometimes called as overexploitation, it is the process of taking resources from natural
environments faster than they can be replaced.
• decreases the amount of species by killing off more organisms than the ecosystem can
reproduce.

WAYS TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

• Reduce pollution • Plant trees

• Reduce, Reuse and Recycle • Conserve water
• Dispose of waste properly • Conserve energy
• Drive less • Use Reusable products
• Clean your surroundings • Use renewable energy
