LEARNING OBJECTIVES :

At the end of this lesson, a student will able to :

1. State the meaning of chemical formula, empirical formula and
molecular formula.
2. Solve numerical problems involving empirical formula and
molecular formula.
Definition : A representation of
a chemical substance using
CHEMICAL alphabets to represent the atoms
and subscript numbers to show
FORMULA the number of each type of
atoms found in the elementary
entities of the substance.
EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL FORMULA

EMPIRICAL FORMULA AND MOLECULAR FORMULA

1. Empirical formula – The chemical formula that shows

the simplest ratio of the number of atoms of each
element in a compound.

2. Molecular formula – The chemical formula that shows

the actual number of atoms of each element found in a
molecule of a compound.
