ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION

PROCESS
Environmental remediation ;

is the removal of pollutants or

contaminants from water (both
groundwater and surface water) and soil.
These waste products are removed for the
protection of human health, as well as to
restore the environment.
• Environmental remediation Process ;

It involves an all-encompassing steps or

processes of restoration of the
environment from contaminant by
detection, site assessment,
determination of remedial measure,
remediating the area and further
evaluation.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
REMEDIATION
1. SOIL REMEDIATION :

It refers to all techniques and

processes used for the removal of
contaminant in soil which could be
harmful.
to human health and environment
2. Ground And Surface Water Remediation:

Is the process that is used to treat

contaminated groundwater by
removing the pollutants or
converting them into harmless
products
3. Sediments Remediation ;

Is the process of removing loosely

arranged particulate materials
founds at the bottom of natural
and man-made surface water
bodies such as shells,decaying
matter, etc.
CAUSES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
DEGRADATION
 Radiation

 Burning of fossil fuel

 Industrial Emission

 Water Pollution
EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
 Ozone depletion

 Acid rain

 May increase the risk of

cancer

 Increased risk of skin of

cancer
ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATON PROCES
The remediation process often entails the
following steps;

1. Detection and Site Assessment.

First, specialists will examine the site to ascertain

what contaminants are present. They will map
the area and sample materials such as soil and
groundwater to evaluate the extent of the
pollution and how much effort will be required to
remove it.
2.Determining Remediation Methods.

Specialist will determine appropriate clean-

up methods. Environmental remediation
techniques include, activated carbon-based
technology and Soil washing ion exchange.
3. Selecting Safety Measures:

Environmental remediation specialist will also assess

what safety measures will need to be enforced to
protect the clean-up crew and community members
from injuries, exposure to toxic chemicals, and
prevent wrongful death

4. Remediating the Area:

Environmental remediation specialists will then
conduct the actual clean-up, complying with local
and federal regulations
5. Further Evaluation;

Once the clean-up is complete, specialists will

re-examine the area to determine if their
efforts were successful.

CASE STUDY
Electro kinetic-enhanced remediation.

This form of environmental remediation

introduces an electrical current to the
groundwater to remove contaminants
such as organic, inorganic, and radioactive
and heavy metals wastes.
Ion Exchange.
It is the method use to remove impurity from
water. Synthetic resin and natural zeolites are use
in ion exchanges process. Arsenic-5 can be
remove by the use of strong base anions
exchange resins (trimethyl ammonium group
C4H11N).In ion exchange process, removal of
arsenic-5 depends on PH, concentration ion,
alkalinity and type of resin.
Activated carbon-based technology.

In laboratory water purification, activated

carbon is used to pre- treatment to remove
free chlorine and chloramines from the feed
water.

It is also used to remove trace organic

impurities from purify water .
Soil Washing

Is a water-based process for scrubbing soils ex-

situ to remove contaminants. The process
removes contaminants from soils in one of the
following way;
By dissolving or suspending them in the wash
solution (which can be sustained by chemical
manipulation of PH for a period of time.
