Introduction
Science education and national development
◦ Science education and mathematics education have many common
values and the competency yo face challenges.
◦ Science, besides being and essential part of culture also serves as a
powerful way of thinking.
◦ Science education is necessary for the world of work and national
economy.
◦ Advancement in science plays a great role in the progress of human race i. e.
increase in the quality of human life, ensuring sustainable development in our
planet earth, coexistence of all groups of people.
◦ From making available to all the basic needs of human life such as water, food
and shelter, to managing efficiently important issues that affect us like
agricultural production, water resources, human care, pollution free
environment, quick transport and communication, in all science has an
important role.
◦ Hence besides making available science education to everyone it is also
necessary to make everyone participate according to his/her ability in the
decision making process.
◦ If the majority of people in a country do not have science education they are
not capable of conserving the environment and also become the cause for
environmental degradation.
◦ Research studies have revealed that there is a high correlation between nations
progress and personal development of people in a country and access to
Quality science education for more number of people.
◦ Science education is not just learning Science related information and facts.
◦ It is acquiring the skills of science such as scientifically analyzing
everything, having belief in cause and wffect relationship, etc.
◦ Science education includes not only providing Science related basic
knowledge to students but also making them acquire values, attitudes and
practical skills of Science.
◦ Only those people having Science education can effectively participate in
various development activities of the nation.
◦ Till the half of the last century,a nation’s economic development was
depending on the manufacturing sector
◦ However in the past 20 years it is depending on the process in the knowledge
sector.
◦ The phenomenal development in ICT is the major factor of development in
various fields.
◦ Today, Science and mathematics education is basic source for knowledge
explosion.
Mathematics education and national development

◦ Mathematics is called as queen of also sciences.

◦ It helps to get accurate knowledge about the external world.
◦ As Mathematics is the basis for all science and technology, the NPE 1986 made
the teaching of both science and Mathematics compulsory from std. 5th to 10th .
◦ NPE expressed its belief that only through this step people’s thinking pattern
could be directed along the right lines .
◦ Today , ith has been realized thar analyzing the human behavior, studying
attitudes and opinion and analyzing the data obtained with regard to any issues
or problem very accurately etc. also need Mathematics.
◦ Mathematics education is not merely to make students well-versed in
numerical computations.
◦ It also includes developing in students ability such as logical thinking, using
symbols in thinking, analysis and synthesis measuring things accurately etc.
◦ National development is not one and the same as economic development. It is
only a part or dimension of the total development of the society.
◦ National development is defined as continuous improvement of material and
human resources of a nation inorder to change the physical environment to
enhance the quality of the life of all the citizens.
◦ Satellites , mobile phones, life changing gadgets and all modern discoveries
are the result of science and technology.
◦ Mathematics is the basic factor for fostering the advancement of science and
technology.
◦ The use of mathematics for common people is to make them think logically.
◦ Knowledge in geometry and trigonometry which are important segments of
mathematics,is used in architecture surveying sculpture , modeling etc.
◦ From this it is clear that mathematics play a great role in national development.
◦ Computer application which is very popular at present, has its base in
mathematics.
◦ Computer is a technological need which help us to perform and that too more
of what we are already doing, fast and accurately.
◦ Quantative techniques are a part of mathematics.
◦ These are used in the software development and statistical research.
◦ They also help in commerce and industries in taking decisions accurately.
◦ For intense mathematics helps in deciding what type of machines are to be
used for maximum production and that too in a short time to earn more profit.
◦ Above descriptions clearly reveal the use and contributions of mathematics
knowledge in day to day human activities.
Conclusion
The recommendations of national policy on education which states that “Science
and mathematics education are in indispensable for the development of human
progress analysis all should be made to learn them through the school education
“ is fully acceptable in present context.
