INTRODUCTION

 Amazon is one of the largest and most successful e-commerce companies


in the world, founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994
 It offers a wide variety of products and services, including online retail
sales, digital streaming of movies and music, cloud computing services, and
more.
 Amazon's online retail platform allows customers to purchase products
from various categories, such as electronics, clothing, books, and
household items, and have them delivered directly to their homes.
 Amazon is also a major player in the cloud computing industry through its
Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform
 Amazon has grown rapidly since its inception, and as of 2021, the company
had a market capitalization of over $1.6 trillion, making it one of the most
valuable companies in the world.
KEY FINDINGS

 Amazon increased the number of its outbound investments by 55% from 155 in 2020 to 241 in
2021, representing the highest percent increase of any company in the top ten
 India was the leading destination country for Amazon’s FDI, attracting 36 projects, the majority of
which were destined for the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
 Spain and the UK ranked joint second for Amazon investment, each attracting 28 projects, followed
by Germany with 23
 Of the top ten countries in which Amazon invested in 2021, five were European: Spain, the UK,
Germany, France and Italy. Aside from India, Japan was the only other country in Asia-Pacific to
place in the top ten
 Of the 241 FDI investments made by Amazon, 75% were in the consumer goods sector.
Communications and media represented 14% of its investments and renewable energy 6%.
 As would be expected, logistics and warehousing was the primary business function for Amazon’s
investments representing 61% of its total FDI.
KEY FINDINGS

 Sales operations ranked second with a 17% market share and technology
and related infrastructure ranked third with 10%.
 Amazon has created more jobs than any other direct investor since 2015
 With over 2012 – nearly 10,000
 2020 – roughly 55,000
 In contrast to a global decline in FDI due to the pandemic, investment
tracker fDi Regions reports that Amazon has progressively launched
greenfield projects in international markets, hitting a record 179 in 2020.
