Learner Centered Curriculum

Learner-centered curriculum is a method that shifts the focus from the teacher to the student, aiming to develop student independence by making them active in their own learning. Key features include structuring curriculum around personality development, using student needs, interests and abilities to determine objectives, content, teaching methods and materials. Benefits are that it helps students develop skills like problem solving, presentation skills, and skills for their careers by allowing interaction, discussions, group activities and opportunities for students to teach each other. While it can make classrooms noisy and difficult to manage, overall it encourages students to find their own paths in education and gain a personalized structure of knowledge.

INTRODUCTION
• Curriculum design is the pattern or a structure of a curriculum.
• It refers to the arrangement of components of the curriculum.
• Klein (1985) has identified three basic curriculum designs.

* LEARNER CENTERED CURRICULUM

* STUDENT CETERED CURRICULUM
* LIFE CENTERED CURRICULUM
Of these three approaches of curriculum designs, Learner Centered is
to be taken up for discussion.
What is Learner Centered Curriculum?
Meaning and Definition:-
MEANING
It is a method of teaching that shifts the focus of instruction from
teacher to the student. Here the aim is to develop the independence
of the learner by making the learner active in his learning path.
DEFINITION
Donna Brandes & Paul Ginnis define Learner- Centered Curriculum as
“we believe every individual has right to achieve his or her full
potential 100% and that a student centered approach to learning
helps to make this possible. Students are encouraged to participate
fully in, and take responsibility for their own learning; each
individual is valued and trusted.”

students.

aptitude and previous experience.

results of their works.

equipped them for their professional carrer.

with self-reliance to complete their tasks.

through active participation which is based on
learning by doing.

DEMERITS:-
• Classroom becomes noisy and chaotic.
• When students are involved in various stages of a
project, it will be diificult for the teacher to monitor
and manage the activities of all students.

sequence.
• Essential content and values may not find a place in
the curriculum.
CONCLUSION
To sum up we can say that a learner-
centered curriculum encourages students to
find their passions, paths in education and
follow them which results in students gaining
structure of knowledge rather than simply
