The report of pig farming market in June 2018

Since the intensive price fluctuation in 2017, the pig farming industry in Vietnam does not seem to be able to lessen the difficulty of coping with lots of successive challenges. In the
past ten months, supplies have been devastated by two significant epidemics: Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and African Swine Fever (ASF).

In the middle of 2018, due to a significant cut in pig farming following the 2017 price fluctuation resulting in a temporary supply shortage, pork price skyrocketed about 3,000 - 5,000
VND/kg per month, reaching a record level of about 55,000 VND/kg in some northern areas. Pork price and its demand were predicted to significantly increase at the end of the year
due to the coming of Tet, leading suppliers to rekindle hopes to increase the scale of production. However, the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth disease around the last three months of the
year made those hopes extinguished.

Coping with epidemics, backyard supply and small private ones had to bear the pressure of debts, forcing them to temporarily stop raising or scaling down the numbers of sow herds.
Meanwhile, med-sized and large-sized private supplies implemented the re-herd to take full advantage of the short-term supply shortage, along with intergrated sow supply. However,
the rate of re-herding was relatively modest. Therefore, the herds of med-sized and large-sized private supplies recovered slightly by the end of 2018. Those herds accounted for more
than 30% of nationwide total sows, with the main expansion of intergrated sow supply - up to almost a quarter of the total sow herds. In addition, the amount of imported pork
contributed a small portion - about 11,623 tonnes of meat, to the total supply of 41.7 million heads - equivalent to 3.2 million tonnes of pork nationwide.
