Abeka Science: Order and Design

Taxonomy

 Taxonomy is the science of

classification.
Taxonomy
 John Ray was one
of the first person to
develop Taxonomy.
 He developed a

modern definition
for the word specie.
Taxonomy
 A species is a distinct type
organism.

Linnaean system
 Carolus Linnaeus
continued with John
Ray’s work of
classifying organisms
and became known as
the Father of
Taxonomy.
Linnaean system
 He classified organisms according
to their body structure by placing
organisms with similar structures
into categories and subcategories.
Linnaean system
 The two languages used by
Linnaeus were Latin and Latinized
Greek.
Linnaean system
 Linnaeus grouped living things
into two main categories called
kingdoms:
 1. Kingdom Plantae (the plant

kingdom)
 2. Kingdom Animalia (the animal

kingdom)
Linnaean system
 Scientists have since added to
Linnaeus’s first two kingdoms to
created six kingdoms.

 Kingdom Animalia

 Kingdom Fungi

 Kingdom Protista

 Kingdom Eubateria

 Kingdom Archaebacteria
Kingdom- Plantae
Kingdom- Plantae

 Green plants are multicellular

organisms and usually make food
through photosynthesis.
Kingdom- Fungi
Kingdom- Fungi

 Plant-like organisms that do not

conduct photosynthesis.
Kingdom- Animalia
Kingdom- Animalia
 Multicellular animals that can
move and collect food.
Kingdom- Protista
Kingdom- Protista

 Single celled organisms.

 They are not green plants, fungi, or

multicellular animals;
Kingdom- Protista
Kingdom- Protista
Kingdom- Eubacteria
Kingdom- Eubacteria
 True bacteria, including common
disease-causing bacteria;
Kingdom- Archaebacteria
Kingdom- Archaebacteria

 Bacteria that are very different

from true bacteria.
Kingdom- Archaebacteria
 Many live in extreme
environments (e.g., very hot or
very cold habitats)
Kingdom- Archaebacteria
Linnaean system

 A set of body structure

characteristics is used to further
divide each kingdom into smaller
and smaller groups.

Scientific Name
The Scientific Name
 An organism’s scientific name
always consists of two parts :
 genus name
 specie name.
The Scientific Name
 For example:
 Lions have the scientific name of
Panthera leo because they are
categorized in the genus Panthera
and the species leo.
The Scientific Name

 The scientific name is always either

italicized or underlined. The genus
name is always capitalized, but the
species name is not capitalized
The Scientific Name
 An organism’s scientific name is
preferred over its popular name because
many oranisms have different popular
names in different regions and
languages.
The Scientific Name
 Some popular names can refer to more
than one species.
