Background of the Temptations


 Began in 1961
 Originally known as the Elgins
 Formed by two groups from Detroit, the Primes and the
Distant.
 It comprised five male singers, including:
Otis Williams
Melvin Franklin
David Ruffin
Paul Williams
Eddie Kendricks
 The group members constantly changed over the years, and
Otis Williams is the only remaining original member.
 The Temptations were one of the popular soul
music performers of the 1960s and 1970s
 Signed with Motown in 1961, an American
record label
 The group has several big hits, including:
My Girl
Ain't too proud to beg
Cloud Nine
Papa Was a Rolling Stone
Musical genre
 The Temptations started producing music in
1961 after signing with Motown.
 They started as an RnB b and became popular
with romantic ballads such as ‘My Girl.'
 Later changed to include pop elements with
politically charged ‘funky’ music.

The temptations began during the violent times in America, including:
 Vietnam War

 Increased racism and discrimination

 Cultural upheaval

During this time, there were many feminist and civil rights
demonstrations, as well as equality marches

These violent times led the group to become politically conscious,


which they later incorporated into their music. The group used music
to unite the country through songs such as ‘Get Ready’ and ‘I Wish It
Would Rain’ to give their audiences glimpses of humanity and hope.
