CITIES

C40 organizes the top 94 mayors focused on the toughest

climate targets in the world

2
WHY CITIES

Science is clear that urgent action is required

IN 2018, THE IPCC SPECIAL REPORT

REAFFIRMED THE NEED TO SET 1.5 AS THE
GLOBAL TARGET

 Catastrophic consequences of even 2 degrees

versus 1.5
 C40 and the Global Covenant of Mayors
commissioned a study to better understand and
communicate the impacts for cities

4
WHY
CITIES

C40 has set out a science-based roadmap for cities to deliver the high
ambition and urgency of the Paris Agreement

• To keep within 1.5 degrees

warming, we must
• peak emissions by 2020;
• drop to 3 tCO2e by
2030, and;
• be net zero by 2050

5
WHY
CITIES

Deadline 2020
 Most of the C40 cities work towards compliance
with the Paris Agreement as part of the C40
participation standards
 Deadline 2020 is a Blueprint for C40 cities to
achieve targets set out in the Paris Agreement
 The programme presents a series of climate
mitigation actions for cities to implement by
2020, i.e. Climate Action Plans (CAP)
 The CAP will ensure cities’ trajectory is on track
for emissions reductions target by 2030
 C40 works with member cities through technical
assistance, training and policy advisory to support
them in their Deadline 2020 journey

6
WHY
CITIES

Focused Acceleration
In 2017, C40 and McKinsey launched a
report identifying key sectors in cities for
ensuring an emissions trajectory compatible
with the 1.5°C target by 2030

7
CITIES
COLLABORATE

Turning data into action: sharing produces faster,

more impactful results

CITIES
COMMIT

Mayoral commitments that reflect the ambitions of the

Paris Agreement

26 cities, state and regional governments 26 cities have committed to ensuring 25 cities, state and regional

regulation to ensure new buildings are net 100 % zero emission buses from 2030, at least 15% less waste will be
zero carbon by 2030, and all buildings 2025 onwards and creating major produced by each citizen, and the
by 2050. zero emission zones in cities by 2030. amount of waste sent to landfill or
incineration will be halved
compared to 2015 levels, with at
least 70% of waste diverted.

A NEW CLIMATE
REALITY

Getting to the future we want

Sustainable urban consumption:
Behavioural change in consumption is crucial with
global populations to double by 2050; including a
rising middle class, particularly in SEA.
Zero waste society: The shift to a circular economy
will create new industries for repair,
remanufacturing, and redesigning of products.

Going local: Rethinking sources of raw materials

and transportation modes will help reduce carbon
emissions.
