Hazard Map

OBJECTIVES

 To become familiar with the community, and to see how the


place is perceived by different groups within the community
 To identify important livelihoods resources in the community
 Initial identification of hazards affecting the community (both
climate-related and other)
MATERIALS
• Flipchart paper
•Thick-tipped markers in a variety of colours
•Masking tape
•Local materials such as stones, sticks, seeds, etc.
•Camera to document the process (ensure that the participants
are comfortable with it before taking photos of them)
•Facilitation Guide
•Report Format
• Clipboard
Steps of Hazard Map Preparation
STEPS
• Identify a landmark in the community.
• Put a mark or a stone to stand for the landmark

• draw the boundaries of the community

• draw the location of settled areas, critical facilities and


resources in the community ( such as settlements,
churches/mosques, health clinics, schools, and resources such
as forested areas and water bodies)

• identify hazards (weather hazards, other natural hazards, as well as


human induced hazards) that affect their livelihood or business assets,
inputs and resources
• identify the areas at risk from different types of hazards, and mark these
in the appropriate locations on the map

• next step will explore how those hazards are affecting


community’s livelihoods
