3D - DESIGN

The 3 basic stages in the process of Designing:

1. Analysis – defining and understanding the project.

2. Synthesis – formulating a possible solution or methodology.
3. Evaluation – critically reviewing the pros and cons of the
proposed solution or methodology.
THE PROCESS OF DESIGN MAY BE DIVIDED INTO
FOLLOWING PHASES:

Programming.
Schematic Design.
Design Development.
Construction Documentation.
Contract Administration.
PROGRAMMING
 Involves detailed analysis of the client / user’s needs, requirements, goals, budget factors,
site constraints.
 Requirements are documented in written format and the site parameters are recorded
graphically.
 Varies from project to project, due to variation in project type, size, quantity and quality
of information supplied by client.
 Study of similar projects.
CHECKLIST OF REQUIRED INFORMATION:

 Goals and objectives.

 Functional aspects.
 User requirements.
 Activity requirements.
 Furnishings and equipment.
 Adjacencies.
 Space requirements.
 Time and money requirements.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN
 Requires bringing together various ideas, solutions and integrating them into a suitable process.
 Involves following steps:
1. Creation of Relationship diagrams.
2. Creation of Blocking diagrams.
3. Creating Fit plan.
4. Creating Stacking plan. (used only if project occupies more than
one floor of a building.)
 Useful to generate more than one idea.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Involves finalizing the plan and fully developing all the
components of the design.
To be drafted accurately and to scale.
Must include every possible element of the design.
This is often seen as the comprehensive final design
presentation of a project.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
A set of Construction drawing includes:
 Floor Plans – furniture plan, demolition plan, construction plans, etc.
 Reflected Ceiling Plans – type of false ceilings, patterns on them, materials used, etc.
 Elevations – both interior and exterior, information about every wall in the project.
 Details – types of doors, windows, staircases, floorings, etc.
 Mechanical and Electrical drawings – air conditioning, plumbing, security systems, fire
alarm systems, etc.
 Schedules – room finish, door finish, hardware details, etc.

ADMINISTRATION
 Final phase of a design process includes periodic site visits and evaluation of progress reports.
 Criteria by which a design should be assessed:
1. Function and Purpose
2. Utility and Economy
3. Form Style
4. Image and Meaning
To help understand and ultimately to fulfil, the function and purpose of a user’s activity
requirements for that space, the following outline can help the designer program these
requirements, translate these needs into forms and patterns and integrate into spatial context.
3Ds MAX
 Developed in the year 1987 by an American Company – Yost Group, software was
formerly named as ‘3D Studio’.
 Between 1987 – 1996, the software became famous and widely used for making cartoons
and animations.
 Initially developed for cartoons and animations, in the year 2004 the software was
purchased by Autodesk and renamed as 3Ds Max.
 Autodesk expanded the software usage to building designing, product designing, 3D
object designing, thus making 3Ds Max a vital software for Civil Industry and Product
Development.
FEATURES OF 3Ds MAX
 Helps the designers to fully explore, validate and communicate their ideas from initial concept stage to a final
presentation. Also, allows to simulate and analyse a design in different ways.
 Possible to generate any number of views and look at all the options available.
 Editing the views is also quite easy.
 Allows the designer to view the interior of a particular project, w.r.t scale.
 Has an elaborate material library, allowing the designer to render an entire scene using various materials, so
that the client can choose from various options.
 Also allows the designer to see how model would look during the day(sunlight) and at night(artificial
illumination).
 Software also has the ability to create and present architectural walkthroughs, which act as an exceptional
way to ‘previsualize’ how an office or residence will look before it is built.
