MERLIN

• MERLIN - Machine for Evaluating Roughness

using Low-cost Instrumentation

Figure : MERLIN showing different parts

Source : Cundill, 1991
• Manually operated instrument
• Cheap, simple to operate and self calibrating.
• Measures vertical displacement to less than a millimeter
• Displacements are recorded by means of a histogram on a
chart mounted on the instrument by putting cross marks in the
AIM 570 – AIMIL Product box of the histogram where the pointer is placed as per the
movement of the probe

From MERLIN data sheet :

• D = (13*5)+(4/5)*2 + (4/5)*3 = 69

• For all road surfaces :

• IRI = 0.593 + 0.0471D ; 42 > D > 312 ; 2.4 > IRI > 15.9

• IRI = 0.593 + 0.0471 (69) = 3.8429

The IRI of 3.8249 states a In this experiment, indicating the road surface is rough
with frequent minor depressions.
