 We use “an” when it's followed by a


vowel sound.
She has a university degree.
It took me an hour to get home.
Important Note
We don't usually use an article before:
bed, work, home, school, university, prison and hospital.
My son has started school now.
I go to university twice a week.
My aunt is in hospital now. She made an accident.

But we usually use ‘the’ if someone is just visiting the place, and not there
as a student/ prisoner/ patient, etc.
I went to the school to meet my son’s teacher.
