WHAT IS
PRODUCTION
SYSTEM?
a system that converts
factor inputs into About

outputs which is capable of
satisfying the market
demand.

TYPES OF Job Production
PRODUCTION - involves the manufacturing of one or a few
products within a predetermined time and
SYSTEM: cost.
JOB Advantages
PRODUCTION • A wide variety of products can be offered
to customers.
• The workers are more skilled in
comparison to other systems.
• Ease in management due to limited
resources and workers.
• Flexibility in process and creative
methods to generate unique output.
TYPES OF Disadvantages
PRODUCTION
SYSTEM: • The higher lead time of the system.
JOB • Under-utilization of equipment.
PRODUCTION • Requirement of highly skilled labors.
TYPES OF Batch Production
- This production system is more than a unit
PRODUCTION production but less than mass
SYSTEM: production. The batch contains a limited
BATCH number of similar products manufactured
PRODUCTION simultaneously.
Advantages
• Usage general-purpose machines.
• Risk can be substituted among Batches.
• Better resource utilization.
• Per-unit cost is lesser in comparison to
unit production.
TYPES OF Disadvantages
PRODUCTION
• It requires specific fixtures.
SYSTEM:
• High cost in sourcing materials.
BATCH • High work-in-progress inventory.
PRODUCTION • More lead time due to changes in
set-up.
Continuous Production TYPES OF
- the production occurs continuously with PRODUCTION
a consistent supply of materials. In SYSTEM:
other words, the products are
constantly in motion.
CONTINUOUS
PRODUCTION
Advantages
• Less amount of wastage.
• Semi-skilled can also be employed.
• Higher profit margins.
• The process flow is constant.

8
Disadvantages TYPES OF
PRODUCTION
• Less flexible to increase or decrease SYSTEM:
the number of processes.
• Restrictions on product differentiation.
CONTINUOUS
• Incapable of fulfilling individual PRODUCTION
demand.

9
Mass Production TYPES OF
PRODUCTION
- is the production of large quantities
SYSTEM: MASS
of products using efficient methods.
It involves the manufacturing of
PRODUCTION
discrete parts, popularly known as
Assemblies.

10
Features: TYPES OF
PRODUCTION
• Special machinery SYSTEM: MASS
• Replaceable parts PRODUCTION
• Division of labor

11
Advantages TYPES OF
PRODUCTION
• The cycle time is SYSTEM: MASS
comparatively less. PRODUCTION
• Automation of material
handling.
• Low work in progress.
• The cost of production is low.

12
Disadvantages TYPES OF
PRODUCTION
• Default at one place may stop SYSTEM: MASS
the entire production. PRODUCTION
• Line layout needs changes with
the change in product design.
• High capital investments.

13
Mass production is to produce
goods at a lower cost, making
CONCLUSION
them more affordable to
consumers.

Evolving Paradigms of Manufacturing: From Mass
Production to Mass Customization and
Personalization
S. Jack Hu
CASE STUDY:
The study reviews the development of the three MASS PRODUCTION
manufacturing paradigms and discusses the
enabling technologies for each. While the goals of
mass production, mass customization and
personalization can be summarized as economy of
scale, economy of scope and value differentiation
respectively, the role of the consumer also changes
from “buy”, “choose” and “designs” participation.
Each newer paradigm will encompass the goals
and approaches of a prior paradigm and demand
more responsive manufacturing systems 15
