Introduction:

07/27/2023
 In electrical power system, transmission and distribution networks are designed
to operate thyristor drives and converters that generate harmonics on the
network, causing distortion in the voltage and current waveforms.
 The harmonic voltage levels on electric power distribution systems are generally
increasing due to the changing nature of the system load. Hence, harmonics
levels will soon require reduction through the application of tuned filters.
 The calculation of design parameters for filter component of harmonic active
filter are applied in this project

Literature Review:

07/27/2023
 Harmonic distortion in electric power systems affects the whole system
environment, often at large distances from the original sources. That are evaluate
and reduce the harmonic distortion [1].

 Thus it is important to analyse the various harmonic problems, to evaluate the

harmonic level and reduce the THD of load current and line current[2].

 The harmonic filtering is one of the solutions to prevent the troublesome harmonics
from entering the rest of the system [8]

 Improved the power quality of a system that can be in a transmission line,

distribution and it is possible to reduce the Total Harmonic distortion[4]
Objectives: 7

07/27/2023
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the performance of active filters and also to analyse
the harmonic distortion cause by harmonic source to achieve this aim, the thesis is
carried out for the following objectives:

• To ensure the performance of filter design that approach to the system is efficient
• To design an active filter in order to reduced harmonic distortion through to the
power system.
• To determine the distortion that existed through the system by analyse the harmonic .
• To ensure the efficiency and controllability is increasing the concern for harmonic
distortion levels .

Problem Statement

07/27/2023
 Evaluation of harmonics filter is crucial to make sure the filter is in optimum
design, not under or over design [1].
 This thesis is essential in terms of power efficiency and power handling deliver
system network. It is important because this aspect related to the most
transmission and distribution system requirement.
 Harmonic distortion can cause severe disturbance to certain electrical equipment.
 It is the duty of the electric utility to provide a clean supply.
 Many countries now set limits to the harmonic distortion allowed on the
distribution networks.

Original contribution

07/27/2023
A design of an SAPF will be proposed, and filter results from simulation will be validated
experimentally. The following outcomes will be achieved at the end of this thesis.

 A prototype will be built to filter the current harmonic content generated by a non- liner
load [4].
 Comparing the performance load current and line current of SAPFs (Shunt active power
filters) when used as a resistive and inductive load.
 A design of the filter will be proposed to compensate for various load conditions through
the use of variable line inductor. The new filter design needs to be validated in the future

Advantages and disadvantages

07/27/2023
Advantages:
 Filtering approach is quite appropriate for high power application
 Good pass band and stop band
 It can be optimize to minimize the switching losses as well as total harmonic
distortion for supply currents.
Disadvantages:
 Filtering can not be performed for the whole spectrum of harmonic due to switching
and power rating.
 Slew rate also effects at high frequency.
 It requires more power supply.
Conclusion and future work 20

07/27/2023
Conclusion:
 A SAPF was simulated using MATLAB/Simulink library. Measured non-linear loads
data from laboratory tests were imported and modelled using the Signal Builder block of
Simulink. The operation of the filter result show that the proposed APF and its control
system is able to reduce the harmonic contents of the source current and reduce the THD
to around 6% of the paper in published in 2010 that is Shunt active filter [2].

 Simulation results show the effectiveness of shunt active power filter for harmonic
elimination in distorted source current. From THD for line current and load current as
shown in Fig THD analysis it can be said that the effectiveness of the active filter in
compensating for harmonic components will reduce the THD from 30.73% to 8.21%
This means that the THD of line current satisfies IEEE-519 standard.
21
Conclusion and future work

07/27/2023
Future work:

 Further research needs to be conducted to improve the designs of SAPFs. Namely, to

design a filter that is able to compensate for various combinations of non-linear loads. The
most effective work will be more reduced the THD of line current for various non-liner
load.
