This is a comparative study between the freedom of South Africa and freedom of India.

SOUTH AFRICA
 Apartheid was a sysem of institutionalised racial segregation that existed in South Africa and
South West Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s.
 Apartheid policy that governed relations between South Africa’s white minority and nonwhite
majority and sanctioned racial segregation and political economic discrimination against
nonwhites.
INDIA
 The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of
ending the British rule in India. The movement spanned from 1857 to 1947.
 On 15th August 1947, India was declared independent from British colonialism, and the reins
of control were handed over to the leaders of the Country. India’s gaining of independence was
a tryst with destiny, as the struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one, witnessing the
sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives on the line.
RACISM IN SOUTH AFRICA
 For decades South Africa was the seat of white supremacy.
 After the Anglo-Boer war, apartheid was introduced in South Africa. The society based on
racial-discrimination was the hardest and most inhuman society in the world.
 There was a lot of exploitation and oppression of the black for decades.
INDIAN NATIONAL
MOVEMENT
 The Indian National Movement was an organised mass movement concerned with the interests
of the people of India and affected by both internal and external factors.
 It led to the formation of Indian National Congress in 1885 and several revolts broke out
across the country. Formation of Muslim League in 1906, Swadeshi Movement 1905 etc.
which speadheaded the freedom struggle in India from 1885 to 1947.
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE
FREEDOM STRUGGLES OF
INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA
 Both nations were under the same colonial empire, both suferred raccial discrimination and in
both places there were Indians.
 Major similarity was the way the struggle for independence that is the path of non violent
disobidience that took birth in South Africa by Gandhiji.
 All non-whites were considered inferior in both the countries and were discriminated.
 Both African National Congress and Indian National Congress were umbrella orgnisations
working at the national level.
DISSIMILARITIES BETWEEN
THE FREEDOM STRUGGLES
OF INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA
 Unlike India, a large number of of whites got settled in South Africa and became local rulers.
 Mandela, the political leader of Africa was put behind the bars for life. But, in India Gandhi
was not given life imprisonment.
 In India, the fight was against colonialism but in South Africa fight was against racialism.
 In South Africa, there was only a group of Moderates and Extremists who followed diferrent
policies and programmes.
