PURPOSE
Differentiate and assimilate the different uses and grammar structures of the advanced
comparatives.
SUMMARY
 The more money you earn, the more you spend (cuanto mas … mas )
 The more you help her, the more grateful she’ll be

 The more with comparatives


 The faster she speaks, the more mistakes she makes.
 The cleaner you are, the happier your mother shall be.

 The more with longer (cuanto mas tiempo)


 The longer you remember her, the sadder you are.
 The longer you stay in that job, the more bitter youl’ll become.
THE MORE WITH LESS
 Contextualization:  Examples:
 Less (menos)  the colder it is, the less I go out.
 The angrier you are, the less I’ll tell youthe
 The more I work, the less I have.

 Fewer (menos - plural)  Examples:


 the fewer problems you give me, the easier my
life will be.
THE MORE WITH BETTER AND WORSE
 Contextualization:  Examples:
 Better (mejor)  the more you practice, the better you’ll do it.
 The more you study, the better score you will get in the exam.

 Contextualization:  Examples:
 worse (peor)  the more nervous you are before the exam, the worse you’ll do it.
 the more stressed you are, the worse your mood will be.
GRAMMAR NOTE
 If anywhere in the structure the verb to be is used with a noun, it may be omitted. If it is
included, it follows the nouns and is not contracted.

Examples:
 The fuller the restaurant (is) the slower the service (is).
 The more motivated the students (are), the more they learn.
 The more expensive the car (is), the better it should be.
GRAMMAR NOTE #2
However, if we do not use a noun, but if the pronoun, we must include the verb without
contration.

Examples:
 The simplier it is, the easier it is to understand.
 The more fashionable the clothes (are), the more unconfortable they are.

3. More and more with nouns
Ex:
More and more children use tablets in the school.
We waste more and more money on things we don’t need.
More and more students practice other disciplines at university.
• DESCENT
 Contextualization:
1. Less and less
 ( cada vez menos)
Ex:
As you get older, you become less and less flexible.
I have less and less time to spend with my family.
She needs less and less money every day.

2. Fewer and fewer  Contextualization:


Ex  ( cada vez menos - plural)
Fewer and fewer people get married now.
There are fewer and fewer tres in the Amazon.
