MEASURES OF

VARIABILITY
Ungrouped Data
HOW FAR IS YOUR HOME
FROM THE SCHOOL?
What can you say about the position of your homes
with respect to the position of the school?
MEASURES OF VARIABILITY
Statisticians use summary measures to describe the amount
of variability or spread in a set of data. The most
common measures of variability are the range, the
interquartile range (IQR), variance, and standard deviation.
RANGE
In statistics, the range of a set of data is the difference
between the largest and smallest values.
INTER – QUARTILE RANGE
The interquartile range (IQR), also called
the midspread or middle 50%, is a measure of statistical dispersion,
being equal to the difference between 75th and 25th percentiles, or
between upper and lower quartiles,
VARIANCE
In statistics, variance is the expectation of the squared
deviation of a random variable from its mean. Informally, it
measures how far a set of (random) numbers are spread out
from their average value.
STANDARD DEVIATION
It is a special form of average deviation from the mean. It is
the positive square root of the arithmetic mean of the
squared deviations from the mean of the distribution.
PROBLEM 1
The scores of 15 randomly selected students in their quiz
are given below. Determine the variance and the standard
deviation of the scores.
