Causes of 1857 Revolt

The 1857 revolt was a turning point in the


history of India. It was a result of years of
discontent among the people against British
rule. There were many factors that
contributed to this uprising, and it is important
to understand all of them if we want to gain a
better understanding of this important event.
In this article, we will explore the causes of
the 1857 revolt in detail and try to get a
clearer picture of what led to this momentous
event.
Outbreak of Revolt

The Mutiny proper began at Meerut on 10


May 1857. Eighty-five members of the 3rd
Bengal Light Cavalry, who had been jailed for
refusing to use cartridges they believed to
be at odds with their religion, were broken
out of prison by their comrades.
