1. Why did Nana Sahib earn the title of the ‘Villain of the Revolt’?
Ans: The Nana Saheb earns the title of the villain of the revolt. It is because he
completely burnt the Kanpur kila that most of the individuals were dead. It is the lesson
which is in the revolt of the year of 1857.
2. List three reforms that were introduced by the British.
Ans: i) Abolition of Sati: This was influenced by the step of Raja Ram Mohan Roy's
frontal attack.
ii) Abolition of Slavery: This was another practice which came under British scanner.
iii) Widow Remarriage: These practices were high on the agenda of Brahma Samaj and
issues got polarized .

Q1.Discuss the result of the Revolt of 1857 on British policies in India.

Ans: i) The revolt of 1857 shook the foundation of British East India Company and
disclosed their inefficiency in handling the Indian administration.

ii) The major impact was the introduction of the Government of India Act, 1858 which
abolished the rule of British East India Company and marked the beginning of the
British raj that bestowed powers in the hands of the British government to rule India
directly through representatives.

1. Why were the Indian sepoys discontented with the British?

Ans: Sepoys were angry with the British because:

i) They were paid low wages.

ii) The British banned beards and the use of caste marks and replacement of turbans
with leather caps.

iii) They were asked to open the new cartridge with their teeth, which had a casing
made of cow and pig fat which triggered the sepoys.

Ans:The British became confident about their position in India because of the following
reasons:
i) The Mughal rulers, after the death of Aurangzeb, were not strong and powerful.
Hence, it was easier for the British to annex states.
ii) The disunity among nawabs and the Mughal rulers helped the British have a firm
stronghold over Indian society, starting from Bengal.
iii) The policies, like the Subsidiary Alliance, helped British annex territories one after
another, without the use of any military power.
iii) The revolt of 1857 was crushed by the British leading to their supremacy over Indian
society.
