1
INTRODUCTION TO THE AREA OF PROJECT

Project Area Overview:

 The project aims to establish the use of quarry dust as a replacement of fine aggregate in Self-
compacting concrete(SCC).

 Preparing SCC, which has a high workability and flowability as compared to a normal concrete.

 Performing tests to evaluate the mechanical properties, such as compressive strength and tensile
strength of SCC with varying percentages of quarry dust.

INTRODUCTION TO THE AREA OF PROJECT
Self-Compacting Concrete(SCC)
1. Self Compacting concrete(SCC) can be defined as concrete that can fill formwork and
encapsulate reinforcement bars through the action of gravity only while maintaining its
homogeneity.
2. SCC achieves full compaction without the application of vibration energy and de-aerates by
itself without any other external source of compaction.
3. It is characterized by its excellent flow properties, combined with high resistance to
segregation.

Characteristics of SCC

4. Filling ability- High fluidity and Deformability to ensure adequate flow under self-weight.
5. Passing ability-The ability to pass through and around reinforcement bars without blocking
6. Segregation Resistance- No segregation during flow and at rest after placing.

INTRODUCTION TO THE AREA OF PROJECT
Advantages of SCC:
1. Faster construction
2. Reduction in site manpower
3. Better Surface Finish
4. Easier Placing
5. No external vibration is needed.
6. Greater Freedom in Design
7. More workability

INTRODUCTION TO THE AREA OF PROJECT

Quarry dust

During the quarrying of rock, dust is produced. Generally, 20-25% of the rock is turned into quarry
dust or waste. It can be used as a replacement for fine aggregates in SCC.
Uses:
1. It can be used as an alternative for fine aggregate in self-compacting concrete.
2. It can be used in construction works, which will reduce the cost of construction.
3. It is quite useful in saving the natural sand or river beds.

5
INTRODUCTION TO THE AREA OF PROJECT

Characteristics:
1. Quarry dust has particle size distribution close to that of sand.
2. It provides sufficient workability and also the required strength.
3. Incorporating quarry dust into concrete can have an impact on the durability of the
material.
4. Quarry dust is a readily available byproduct of the quarrying process, making it a
potentially sustainable alternative to natural river sand.
Advantages:
5. Replacement for Sand in concrete.
6. Cost saving/economical.
7. Reduces impact on the environment.
8. Sustainable alternative to sand.
9. Prevention in environmental and ecological depletion.
10. Advancement in the concrete technology
11. Waste Management

6
JUSTIFICATION FOR THE AREA OF PROJECT/RESEARCH

The main objective behind the selection of this project is to study the durability of SCC on
replacing fine aggregate with quarry dust through various tests.

 Durability is the most important factor to be considered if we want our structure to stand strong for its
whole design period.

 By selecting this project, we can evaluate how well the SCC maintains its durability that is, resistance
to various imposed loads(abrasion), environmental degradation impacts, or chemical exposure when
sand is replaced with quarry dust.

 As per IS 456:2000, durability falls under the limit state of serviceability. It is related to the satisfactory
performance of the structure at working loads.

 Hence, the durability of the structure should be ensured by resisting various abrasions and protecting
the concrete from aggressive water, deterioration due to chlorine, and degradation due to sulfate attack.
