Features of Phylum Arthropoda
Arthropoda is the largest phylum with about
nine lakh species. They may be aquatic,
terrestrial or even parasitic. They have jointed
appendages and a chitinous exoskeleton.
This phylum includes several large classes and
contains the class Insecta which itself represents
a major portion of the animal species in the
world. They possess the ability to survive in
every habitat.
Segmented Body

 One of the defining features of arthropods is their segmented body,

which is divided into three distinct regions: the head, thorax, and
abdomen. This segmentation allows arthropods to have a high
degree of mobility and flexibility.
Exoskeleton

 Another important feature of arthropods is their exoskeleton, which

is made of a tough, protective material called chitin. This
exoskeleton provides support and protection for the arthropod's
body, but it also limits its growth. In order to grow, arthropods must
periodically shed their exoskeleton in a process called molting.
Jointed appendages

 Arthropods also have jointed appendages, which are specialized

structures that allow them to move and interact with their
environment. These appendages can take many different forms,
depending on the species of arthropod. For example, insects have
six legs, while spiders have eight legs and crustaceans have multiple
pairs of legs and claws.
Open Circulatory System

 Arthropods have an open circulatory system, which means that their

blood is not contained within vessels but rather flows freely
throughout their body cavity. They also have a nervous system that
consists of a brain and a ventral nerve cord. This nervous system
allows arthropods to sense and respond to their environment.
Compound Eyes

 One of the most distinctive features of arthropods is their compound

eyes, which are made up of many individual lenses that allow them
to see in multiple directions at once. They also have antennae,
which are sensory structures that help them detect chemicals and
other environmental cues.
 Arthropods are a highly diverse and successful group of
animals that have adapted to a wide variety of ecological
niches. Their distinctive features have allowed them to
thrive in many different environments and play important
roles in ecosystems around the world.
