CHAPTER
1
INTRODUCTION
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted educati on
sys tems, affect ing nearl y 1.6 billion students in 190 count ri es
worl dwide. The pandemic has led to increased soci al di st ancing
issues, making i t diffi cult for educational instituti ons and parent s t o
cont inue thei r educat i on. As a result, online distance learni ng (ODL)
has become the preferred method for learning. However, t he
transition to onl ine l earning is challenging for devel opi ng count ri es
and educati onal aut hori t ies due to inadequate infrast ructure and
pl anning.
INTRODUCTION
Online learning platforms like Sk ype, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and
Google Meet are insufficien t for students' learnin g and engagement
opportunities. The lack of internet facilities, devices, and
environments fo r on line learning from home or other places can
negatively impact learning approaches and students' understanding of
course concepts. Distance education offers advantages such as cost
savings, reduced transportation costs, and the ability to learn while
not attending schoo l. Howev er, some students struggle with online
distance learning due to poor intern et connections and poor internet
connections.
INTRODUCTION
Junior high school students have experienced mental
health problems, depression, and mental breakdowns
due to the heavy workload. Some struggle with online
distance learning due to poor internet connections,
making it difficult for them to understand lessons.
Despite these challenges, online education remains
essential for students to study and continue their
education while the pandemic continues.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. How does onl ine lea rning affect the learner ’s academic
pe rformance?
2. Why do som e stude nts struggle with online learning?
3. What are the key factors for making an online class effective?
4. How effe ctive has online learning been for students?
5. Is online educa tion as effective as face-to-face instruction?
6. How stressful i s distance learning for students during the
COVID-19 pandemic ?
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
T his study aimed to identify the physical, m ental, en vironm en tal, and social
factors affecting the academic perform ance of students in online classes

1 . Determine the association of elec tronic gadget u se with academ ic perform an ce

and health status
2 . Know how games and social m edia cause d istractions to students 3. Determ ine
the effect of internet u se on th e stu dents' academic perform ance.
4 . E valuate the e ffect of the learning environ ment on students' academic
p erformance.
5 . Assess the efficacy of distance learning via the internet
6 . Measure the im pact of pressure on a student's academ ic perform anc e.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
• This study a ims to assess the impact of online learning on junior high
school students' ac ade mic achievement and efficacy. The Department
of Educa tion has use d distance learni ng modalit ies to ensure
continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, difficulties in
remote learning inc lude unst abl e internet connectivity, inadequate
resources, vague c ontent , overloaded lesson activities, poor peer
communi cation, conflict with home responsibilities, a poor learning
environment, and me ntal health struggles. The st udy provides
recommenda tions for improving online learning experiences for junior
high school students.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
HYPOTHESIS
• Online distanc e learning has prove n to be an e ffec tive
option f or junior h igh school students during the pande mic.
It a llows students to attend classes from any location,
c onne ct with a wider ne twork, a nd acce ss lea rning mate rials
a t their leisure . Online learn ing also reduce s f in ancial costs,
a s it eliminates transportation, m eals, and rea l esta te
e xpe nse s. Additionally, a ll course ma teria ls a re a vaila ble
online , cre ating a more affordable and environm entally
friendly le arning environme nt.
NULL HYPOTHESIS
• On line lear ning m ay be bene ficial during the pandemic but
can negatively impa ct students' ac adem ic perf orm ance . Poor
inter net connections c an cause d isruptions in the classroom,
preventing tim ely a ssignme nts an d m issed instr uction.
Ad ditiona lly, stude nts ma y struggle to grasp conc epts taught
throu gh onlin e schools due to distra ctions. Distra ctions ca n be
more easily e xperienc ed in online environme nts, m aking it
diffic ult for students to fully understand the content.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
• This research examines the impact of online distance
learning on junior high school students at Our L ady
of Lourdes Academy, focusing on factors affecting
their academic performance during the pandemic.
The study w ill involve 34 respondents from four
grade levels, using a survey questionnaire to gather
insights and opinions on the effectiveness of online
learning.

• This chapter presents the related studies and important
concepts gleaned from the literature that has been found
useful in the conceptualization of the present study. These
related studies and literature offered assessment and
enrichment in the conduct of this research work on the
effects of online distance learning on the junior high school

The Covid-19 pande mic has le d to a shift in teac hing a nd lea rning me thods,

LITERATURE
The COVID-19 school lockdown in Belgium led to a significant decline
in primary-school students' performance on standardized tests,
indicating signific ant le arnin g losses. Factors contributing to this
phenomenon include the sudden shift from traditional face-to-face
learning to remote or online education, which presented challenges in
adapting to ne w teaching methods, accessing resources, and
maintaining motiva tion. T he closure of schools disrupted structured
learning routines and social dynamics, resulting in reduced motivation,
decreased focus, and limited opportunities for collaborative learning.

The prolonged period of school closure also impacted students' access

to personalized support and individualized instruction, leading to
potential ga ps in understanding and learning progress. T he emotional
and psychological toll of the pandemic may have negatively impacted
students' cognitive functioning and overall well-being.

Students from socioec onomically disadvantaged backgrounds

experienced minimal or no advancement in their learning during the
lockdown, with the negative impact most pronounced among them.

The Philippine s ranks 77th among countries with the slowest and least
stable internet c onnection, highlighting the challenges faced by
students in virtual le arning. The digital divide among Filipino students
and the lack of adequate preparedness for virtual learning can lead to
numerous challenge s during virtual classroom education. A survey
conducted by B aticulon et al. (2020) revealed that students faced
numerous barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic, including factors
such as gender, age, ye ar level, annual income, academic standing,
internet access, and prior hours spent on online learning.

R esearch has also e xplored the psychological impact of the transition to

online learning and its impact on students' well-being . Distance
education offers students the freedom to customize their learning
experience by providing flexibility in scheduling and environment.
However, this flexibility comes with a greater responsibility for
students to regulate their own learning. Students must possess self-
discipline and time management skills to allocate sufficient time for
studying, completing assignments, and participating in online
discussions.

D istractions in online cla sses can lead to a lack of interest in the online
learning experience. To overcome these challenges, students need to
develop effective strategies for self-regulation and time management.
Setting dedicated study spaces, minimizing distractions, and establishing
a structured routine c an help students maintain focus and engagement
during online cla sses. Educators can create interactive and engaging
online learning environments that foster student participation and
motivation. By addre ssing these factors, students can navigate potential
c hallenges and mainta in their interest and commitment to online learning.

on junior high school students at Our Lady of
Lourdes Academy Bacoor Cavite, Inc. It investigates
its effects on psychological well-being, including
stress levels, academic motivation, self-esteem, and
social connectedness. A quantitative research design
will be used to gather empirical data, with 34
students participating in surveys.
RESPONDENTS OF THE
STUDY
• The respondents of the study were teenagers who were
aged 12-17. The teenagers were composed of Filipino
teens who came from the Province of Cavite and its
surrounding provinces. However, the 4 researchers of
this study were Grade 10 Level, which means that there
would be only 5 respondents, the test questionnaires
will not be reliable for the researcher because they
made the questionnaire on their own
