UL891 - SWBD

2. Minimum Support – only option

• Sell you UL891 SWBD bus stack
• Sell you UL489/UL1066 breakers
• Provide .stp file for interior frame ( in the future, we will commercialize SWBD interior frame for sale,
OEM will still need to manage the SWBD interior frame in their UL file as SWBD interior frame is not
UL891 listed component)
• OEM has their own UL file – this is a MUST
• OEM will need to have someone well versed in UL891 or will need to train an employee on it
• UL investigation into OEM, site visit, certified employee expert on UL891
• UL 891 annex G
• How to brace bus, how to make connections, insulators, overall WBS, guidelines.
• Anything outside of Annex G, they are going to make you retest (ex. Changes to bracing
spacing)
• Maintain their UL file, Maintain their costs, inspections, site visits, follow ups, etc.

8/28/23 Slide 22

Feedback
• Need to have some type of sheet metal fab capabilities – otherwise tough to be successful with profit margins

• We are not UL891 consultants, we have UL listed product available to you to incorporate into your UL files, here are the best components you need to
achieve a UL891 offering

• A plug-in bus stack panelboard interior is going to make OEM lives much simpler and easier than traditional bolt on panelboard interior – VALUE
PROP

• Needs to be screening of OEM. If they are not familiar with UL – going to be tough to get them set up
• The OEMs we have had the most success with are familiar with UL, and working with them has been relatively easy. Take these UL listed products,
purchase them, incorporate them into their UL file, and perform whatever paper studies/testing that UL requires them to get a UL mark on the product

• Selective OEMS. We need to evaluate the OEM’s level of experience, where they are at, what they are trying to accomplish, etc… Some OEMs have
been around a long time and they know what they are doing, others are just getting started… We need to focus on the ones that we are ready to do
business with...

• We need to do pilots, start to grow 1, while we recover on overdue, then once we understand more, plant gets healthy, that’s when we can start to grow

8/28/23 Slide 23

Questions to ask OEMs
• Do you know what a UL file is?
• Do you have your own UL file?
• Which versions of UL do you have? UL67? UL891? UL50?
• What are you trying to accomplish? UL67? UL891?
• Do you have a relationship already with UL?
• Do you have design expertise?
• Do you have sheet metal fabrication capabilities?
• What are your value adds?
• Customization, lead time?
• What projects are you targeting? What are some potential opportunities?

8/28/23 Slide 24

Helpful Tips
• Vet your UL file, which versions you have
• Vet your suppliers
• Vet your fabrication capabilities
• Vet your engineering capabilities
• Vet your UL relationship

• Starts with opening up a project with UL and discussing what you are trying to accomplish.
• Ex. “We have these UL listed components (bus stack and breakers), we would like to take them and build our own UL891 SWBD
with them, how can we accomplish this?
• Have pre-list of all the components you are adding to the UL file
• Enclosure, runbacks, bracing (OEM design)
• Purchasing and adding in this CPT, breaker, pilot device, bus stack, etc
• Try to use families as much as possible, try not to limit yourself to individual SKUs

Success Story with Maverick
1. Relationship began with Customer that worked at an EOEM that learned about Tmax Link SWBD program
2. Customer understood the capabilities of the ABB Emax and Tmax breakers
3. Customer ended up going to another EOEM (Maverick) that was strong in the data center market.
4. Parish Hare (Distributor) started to work with Maverick as they wanted to sell SWBDs to data center end users
5. Customer started to deep dive into the Emax 2 ACB logics and abilities of the electronic trip
6. Programmable status, embedded ATS logic, power controller logic, programmable status, etc.
7. This allowed us to break down the spec barrier, and along with Schneider's inability to deliver – bolstered our solution for Maverick
8. We just so happened to also have the OEM offering for ReliaGear SWBD and PP bus stack and this was perfect fit
Currently: Maverick does Option 2 for UL891, and Option 1 for UL67. We are working to pilot them with Option 3 for UL67

8/28/23 Slide 27

Why Maverick was successful

• Understood our offering, plug-in bus stack, and the advanced technology within ABB breakers and how that
would allow themselves to differentiate themselves in the market
• Partially vertically integrated
• Need to have some source of sheet metal fabrication – if profit needs to go to other suppliers, margins will
be thin
• Own their own UL891 file, were already building UL891 SWBDs
• Good relationship with UL
• Well versed in UL891, UL67
• https://www.ul.com/services/ul-891-general-coverage-program
• Good relationship with ABB
• Open and good communication for the good and the bad, support, challenges

Interior frame
To fit the bus stack into the enclosure, an interior frame is
provided. For 30"-wide panels, the bus stack can be mounted
only in the center of the enclosure. For 40"-wide panels, the
bus stack must be offset, while on 45"-wide enclosures, the
bus stack can be either center or offset mounted. These
30” Center Frame
configurations help to achieve the highest ampacity and
power density. The interior frame also allows breakers to be
well-positioned and properly bolted

Fronts, gutter doors, blanks and fillers

Top and bottom fronts, together with hinged gutter doors, complete the NEMA 1 enclosure style. Hinged Gutter Doors
Those grant independent access to either the incoming section or the branch distribution section.
Vented fronts are needed when a 100% rated breaker is required.

Standard gutter doors do not prevent access to the breaker handle and trip unit settings. Options
for locking doors are available to prevent access to the breakers. Locking doors are not available
with horizontally mounted XT7 breakers. Fronts
Filler
With certain breaker frames, a filler is needed to cover the gap between the gutter door and the
s
breaker load side. If the bus stack is not completely full of breakers, sheet metal blanks are
needed to ensure isolation from live parts.
