Test
• A set of written or verbal questions used for finding out how
much someone knows about a topic
• A procedure intended to establish the quality, performance or
reliability of something, specially before it is taken to
widespread use

Why is a Test Taken?


 Assessing students’ understanding on a topic
 Identifying what they’ve learned
 Assessing students’ strength and weakness for focus or assistance
 Evaluating Students’ progress

• According to Dewi and Nastiti (2012), Language competence test is a test that

involves components of language such as vocabulary, grammar and

pronunciation.

• Performance Language Test as a test that involves the basic skills in English

which are writing, speaking, listening and reading. (Dewi and Nastiti, 2012)

Direct competence test

• Direct competence tests are tests that focus on measuring the student’s

knowledge about language components like grammar or vocabulary in which

the elicitation uses one of the basic skills (speaking, listening, reading, or

writing).

• For instance, if a teacher wants to know the extent of student’s knowledge of

grammar, he/she can ask them to write a descriptive paragraph.

Indirect competence test

• Indirect competence tests - tests that focus on measuring student’s knowledge

about language components like grammar or vocabulary in which the

elicitation does not use one of the basic skills; speaking, listening, reading or

writing.

• Other ways are used like the multiple choice or fill in the gaps method where a

teacher gives a multiple choice test to students to know their grammar

knowledge.

Direct Performance test

• Direct performance test is a test that focuses on measuring the students’ skill

in reading, writing, speaking and listening and the elicitation is through direct

communication.

• For example, if a teacher wants to know the students’ skill in writing, he can

ask them to write a letter to his/her friend inviting for spending the vacation in

his/her village home.

Indirect Performance test


• Indirect performance test is a test that focuses on measuring the students’ skill

in reading, writing, speaking and listening and the elicitation does not use any

of these skills.

• For example: If the teacher wants to measure the students’ skill in listening,

he/she can give some picture and ask the students to arrange the pictures into

correct order based on the story that they listened.

• Teacher can also ask to choose the pictures of the words that were present in

the story.

• Direct competence tests are tests that measures the student’s knowledge about language

are the tests that measures the students’ skill in reading, writing, speaking and listening through

direct communication.

• Direct Competence Tests focus on the theoretical knowledge about language components whereas

Direct Performance Tests see the applicatory aspect of the language skills.

• Indirect competence tests measures student’s knowledge about language components like

grammar or vocabulary without the use of any basic skill; speaking, listening, reading or writing.

On the other hand, Indirect performance test measures the students’ skill in reading, writing,

speaking and listening without the use any of these skills.
