SOCIETY INFLUENCES A

CRIMINAL.
Emile Durkheim
• was one of the founding father of
sociology. He is best known in
criminology for his concept of
anomie, an important element in
strain theory, and the idea that
some level of crime is normal.
His major books are
• THE DIVISION OF LABOR IN SOCIETY
(1893),
• THE RULES OF SOCIOLOGICAL
METHOD (1895), SUICIDE (1897), AND
• THE ELEMENTARY FORMS OF THE
RELIGIOUS LIFE (1912).
Durkheim claimed that a key contributor to social
cohesion and a preserver of stability is the
“conscience collective,” which consists of moral,
religious, and cognitive beliefs and sentiments.
Durkheim viewed crime as resulting from society's
response, a relativist and sociological conception.
STRAIN
THEORY
A ccordi ng to the st rain t heor y people g et engaged in
cr ime because they experience a lot of str ess or strain,
they become upset and feel negativity around t hem, and
th ey sometimes get involved or connect w ith some cr ime
as a resul t. They may be inv olved in cr ime to r educe t heir

SOCIAL LEARNING
• According toTHEORY
social learning theory, people
engage in crime because they learn to involve
in crime through their friends, and others.
They learn that they are favorable to crime
and get exposed to criminal models.
• Primary groups like the family, friends,
and peer group have a large impact on
what they learn. However, one does
not have to be directly linked with
others to learn from them.
For example, an individual who
witnesses someone they respect
committing a crime, who is then
reinforced for that crime, is then
more likely to commit a crime
themselves

CONTROL
THEORY
The control theory tries to show that a criminal's
behavior can be influenced by their social group.
According to this theory, an offender can change their
ways and resist acts of crime due to the strong
relationship that they have with people in their circle
such as friends or parents.
Robbery, theft, murder, rape etc.
• If a person's parents need surgery and there's
no money to pay the bills, He/she may think
of robbing or stealing to have some money
due to the strong relationship.
• If a father has strong feelings toward his
daughter, he may rape her.
