Session 2: Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions &

Energy Case Studies (10:15 – 13:00)

Ricardo Gorini, DSc. • Virtual • June 2022

Global overview: Energy Transition – where we are and where we need to be

CO2 emission trajectories based on COP WETO 1.5°C: where we need to be by 2030 and 2050
announcement and the WETO 1.5°C Scenario

2
Key milestones and actions for rapid emission reductions, 2021-2030

• Ramping up renewables,
together with an aggressive
energy efficiency strategy, is
the most realistic path
toward halving of emissions
by 2030.
• The decarbonisation of end-
uses needs to make much
faster progress, with many
solutions provided through
electrification, green
hydrogen and the direct use
of renewables.
• A comprehensive set of
policies is needed to achieve
the necessary levels of
deployment by 2030 and
maximise benefits.

3
Breakdown of TFC by energy carrier in industry, buildings and transport in 2019, 2030 and 2050

• In existing buildings, the rate of renovation will need to double, to 2% of the building stock per year through
2030
• The Industrial sector should improve the energy efficiency of processes, material efficiency and apply the
principles of a circular economy
• A drastic reduction in transport sector emissions can only be achieved if technological solutions are
supplemented by behavioural changes

• share fell from 72% in 2010 (881 GW) to 41% in 2020 (1 153 GW)

(excluding pumped hydro)
• low-cost source of electricity, source of grid flexibility, enabling
better integration of variable renewable energy sources, storage
- weeks, months, seasons or even years –
• combine energy and water supply services: irrigation schemes,
municipal water supply, drought management, navigation and
recreation, and flood control.
