First Airplane
● On 17th December, 1903, Orville and Wilbur
Wright (The Wright Brothers), flew the first
motor powered airplane at North Carolina, USA
● Also called Kitty Hawk
● Pilot Aboard
● Travelled 120 ft.
● In flight for only 12 seconds.
● 12-horsepower
● Non-wheeled, linear skids act as landing gears
● Made of wood and fabric, and motor was an
aluminium crankcase
First Metal Airplane
● On January 1st, 1917, Hugo Junker
developed the first metal airplane
named Junker J4
● Made out of light-weight aluminium
called duralumin
● More durable, did not absorb sun or
moisture, a sturdy structure.
● One of the greatest engineering
successes in history
● Equipped with wings, fuselage, wheels,
undercarriage, and tail
First Jet Engine
● On January 1st, 1937, Frank
Whittle and Hans von Ohain
designed the first jet engine.
● It was made up of a fan,
compressor, combustor, turbine,
and nozzle.
● On August 27th, was the world's
first aircraft to fly using the thrust
from a turbojet engine
● The flight was much faster and
efficient
Commercial
Airplanes
● On July 27, 1949, the first
commercial airplane flight took
place.
● Then in 1969 the first wide
winged commercial airplane
was developed
● This airplane was called the
Boeing 747
● It had four engines, two decks,
and it flew at high speeds.
● This was the first step towards
passenger transportation.
Modern Commercial Flight
● On September 1st, 2012, the eco friendly commercial airliner the A380 was created.
● It only produces 75g of CO2 per passenger, which is way under the international limit per
passenger.
● This plane contains many recycled components, and recycles many things it uses, it is
naturally lighted, and burns much less fuel.

Future of Airplanes
● The first major thing to accomplish will be a
more fuel efficient plane. One that can run
on electricity, or solar power.
● New and efficient designs
