Sports Injury
Injuries that most commonly accur during sports or exercise.

Exercise is important to good health, but

people often get hurt when participating in
sports or other physical activities. A sports
injury involves damage to part of your
body due to sports, exercise or athletic
activities.

A sports injury can be acute (sudden) or

chronic (develop over time).
Common causes

• Accidents, such as a fall.

• Poor training practices
• Improper equipment
• Lack of conditioning
• Insufficient warm-up
• Stretching
Common injuries
There are many types of sports injuries. Some of the
most common are:
 Broken bone
 Cartilage tear
 Concussion
 Dislocation
 Tendinitis
 Sprains
 Strains
Who might get a
sports injury?
Injuries diagnostic

Some sports injuries are

more easily diagnosed than
others. More simple cases
such as dislocations, cuts and
grazes are diagnosed through
seeing or feeling the injury.
Acute injuries
Basically, an acute injury is sudden and
spontaneous. According to Sports Trauma
and Overuse Prevention (STOP), acute
injuries are usually the result of one
traumatic event. Common examples of acute
injuries include: Wrist fractures Ankle
sprains Shoulder dislocations Hamstring
muscle sprains Of course, when you receive
an acute injury, you should always apply
common sense.
Chronic Injuries
Chronic injuries are a lot more common than
acute injuries. Usually, chronic injuries occur
over time. This makes them difficult to diagnose
and treat. Additionally, they’re the result of
repetitive trauma to the tendons, bones and
joints.
Acute & Chronic Injury Prevention

Whether the injury is chronic or

acute, they must be treated
immediately. The first step would
be to stop the activity you’re doing
immediately and perform the
R.I.C.E. method. …….

Open
injuries
Unlike closed wounds, such as bruises or closed
fractures, open wounds are injuries that involve a
break in the skin and leave the internal tissue exposed.
The skin has an important role in protecting the
organs, tissues, and other structures inside the body, so
a breach of the skin can potentially invite infection.
Types of open injuries
Treatment of open injuries

Almost all open fractures are

treated with surgery. It is
important to go to surgery as
soon as possible so that your
open wound can be cleaned to
help prevent infection.
Closed injuries

Closed wounds occur when the skin remains intact and the tissue
that lies underneath is not exposed. They are usually caused by
some sort of blunt trauma, such as when someone falls down. Car
accidents commonly lead to this type of problem, which can
damage bones, internal organs and muscles.

Treatment of closed injuries

In many instances, closed wounds are treated

using compression, elevation and immobilization.
The chief goals of this and other treatment
approaches are to keep inflammation and bleeding
under control and to reduce pain.
