SALIENT FEATURES OF FICTION

1. Fiction is heavily drawn from one’s imagination.

2. It depicts the world and an experience that can be
perceived to be mainly contrived or created by the
writer.
3. It involves people who do not truly exist. However, the
literary characters can be observed to be entirely real.
4. It recounts and escribes circumstances when there is a
crisis.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 9
SALIENT FEATURES OF FICTION

5. It presents situations, conditions, and surroundings that

are closely similar to what is real.
6. It presents human life by considering the world of
objective reality through the actions and experiences of
man and the world of subjective reality which centers on
comprehension and apprehension of man.
7. Fiction includes two important composites – characters
and plot; that should go in harmony and unity.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 10
BASIC FORMS OF FICTION

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 11

FLASH FICTION
An emerging form of fiction that is
best remembered because of its
relative shortness. Words used by
the writer range form 100-150 but
still considered a complete story
since all the essential elements of
fiction can be observed.

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 12

SHORT STORY/ SHORT
FICTION
This form relatively can
be done in one sitting
since it deals with a single
complication and a limited
number of characters.

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 13

NOVELLA
This fiction form goes between a
short fiction and a novel. This is
relatively long for a short story
but is somewhat short to be
classified as a novel. Nick
Joaquin’s “The Woman Who Had
Two Navels” is one work of
fiction that best fits this type.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 14
NOVEL
This greatly covers
several plot complications
since it composed of
several chapters. The
number of characters is
relatively bigger.

ELEMENTS OF PROSE FICTION

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 50

CHARACTERS
This mainly involves the voice of those who are
primarily concerned in the circumstances of the
story. Thus, characters are those who give life to
the story’s actions and scenes. It is necessary to
understand that characters are representations of
man for they portray man’s feelings, behaviors,
experiences and aspirations.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 51
CHARACTERS
They can be classified and analyzed based on their
roles, behaviors, reactions, movements, dialogue
and realizations in which all these contribute to
the development of the story. Specifically, they
can be classified as major or minor, round or flat,
protagonist or antagonist, hero or antihero.

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 52

SETTING
The situations, actions, and circumstances of a story
transpire in a certain time and location. The setting, as a
basic element of fiction, provides the total environment
and atmosphere of the story in consideration of time and
space from the movements and actions of the characters in
facing certain crises. The writer may consider a real time
and place just like in Manuel Arguilla’s “Morning in
Nagrebcan.” Arguilla used his hometown, Nagrebcan, as
the setting of his story.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 53
SETTING
Uranza’s “Bamboo in the Winds” is a novel
set during the Martial Law period in
Philippine history. However, a writer can also
creates a contrived environment for the story.
Futuristic Sci-Fi stories can show a contrived
environment.

HAVE YOU WATCHED
ANY STORY OF THIS
TYPE? HOW WILL YOU

SETTINGS USED IN SCI-
FI STORIES?

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 56

POINT OF VIEW
The question to be asked for this is “Who is
recounting or narrating the story?” In the
simplest sense, point-of-view is simply the
vantage point as to how the story unfolds.
This element mainly considers how the
actions and scenes of the story are told and
reported to the readers.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 57
POINT OF VIEW
The development of the story is clearly seen
and understood as readers look into the eyes
and perspective of the narrator. The story can
be reports in different levels or can be
classified regarding a person like the first
person, third person and omniscient point of
view.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 58
PLOT
The plot simply lays out the structure of the
story considering the flow of events and
actions. It also presents the casual relationships
or connections of events. In the attempt to
analyze the plot, it is important to determine its
significant composites: exposition, rising
action, climax, falling action, and denouement.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 59
PLOT
Also, there are various techniques that writers
may take into account to develop the frame of
events such as flashbacks, flash-forward or
prolepsis, foreshadowing, and en medias res.

20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 60

SYMBOLS
The writer may include images that bear
certain meanings that go beyond the
literal. Certain symbols may convey both
positive and negative connotations
depending on how they are used,
presented, and perceived.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 61
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 62
SYMBOLS
For example, the crucifix may
represent suffering and death as
its negative interpretations, but it
can also suggest salvation,
sacrifice, and even history.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 63
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 64
IMAGES
These are principally the features
and the qualities that are concrete
rather than abstract which appeal
to the human senses of touch/feel,
sight, sound, taste, or smell.
20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 65
THEMES
Typically, theme can be a statement of
generalization about life. The highlights
noteworthy realizations concerning the
nature and complexities of human life
cultivated from the experiences,
actions, and decisions of the characters.
