or cut;
Solid materials have
different properties such as
size, shape, texture, color,
weight and volume.
SOLID MATERIALS
CAN
BE CHANGE IN
MANY WAYS
BENT

→ is applying force to
shape the materials
into curve.
BENT
BENT
EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS THAT CAN BE BEND OR BENT

Wire rubber slipper rubber metal ruler

SOLID MATERIALS CAN BE BENT

Bend means to force a straight object to curve.

When bent, materials can change their size and
shape. No new material is made. Only the
physical appearance is changed. Bending of solid
materials is applied in situations like bending of
steel or iron in industries.
IMPORTANCE
Bending materials are important for the following
reasons:
a. You bend to pick up things;
b. You bend materials to make them fit spaces;
c. You bend things to make them artistically beautiful;
d. You bend materials to make activities easier to perform.
e. You bend things to make them useful.
CUTTING
→ is an action of
dividing object by using
sharp edge object like
knife and scissors.
CUTTING
→ is an action of
dividing object by using
sharp edge object like
knife and scissors.
EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS THAT CAN BE CUT

METAL TWIGS

FRUIT

CHICKEN
SOLID MATERIALS CAN BE CUT

Cut means to divide. When materials are

cut, they may change in size and shape
but no new material is formed. Only the
physical appearance of the material
changed. A material can become long or
short when cut.
IMPORTANCE
Cutting of materials are important for the following reasons:
A. You cut materials to either make them long or short.
B. You cut materials to make them fit spaces like steel, twigs or wood.
C. You cut things to make them visually appealing like hammering nails into wood to
change their appearances;
D. You hammer materials to make life easier, safe and comfortable like making houses,
tables, chairs and many more.

*It is important to note that bending, hammering, pressing and cutting of materials
help us a lot in our daily activities.
PRESSING

→ an action applied
to flatten and shape
an object.
PRESSING

→ an action applied
to flatten and shape
an object.
PRESSING

→ an action applied
to flatten and shape
an object.
EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS THAT CAN PRESSED

banana bread tin can meat

SOLID MATERIALS CAN BE PRESSED

Press means to push on an object without

making it move. When pressed, they can change
their size and shape. Others may change their
texture when pressed. No new material is made
when materials are presses. Only the physical
IMPORTANCE
Pressing of materials are important for the following
reasons:
A. You press materials to prepare food like flour, bananas
and potatoes;
B. You press materials to make them fit spaces like tin cans,
steel and metals;
C. You press things to make them visually beautiful like
ironing clothes;
HAMMERING

→ an action
using a
hammer.
HAMMERING

→ an action
using a
hammer.
HAMMERING

→ an action
using a
hammer.
EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS THAT CAN HAMMERED

WOOD HOLLOW TIN GALVANIZED

BLOCK CAN IRON
SOLID MATERIALS CAN BE
HAMMERED
Hammer means to hit or beat or pound something
with a hammer. A hammer is a hand tool usually
consisting of a solid head like iron or wood held at the
end of a handle. It is used for beating, striking or
pounding materials. Solid materials when hammered
changes in size, shape and texture but no new material
is made.
IMPORTANCE
A. You hammer materials to put things together like
wood for houses and furniture;
B. You hammer materials to make them fit spaces tin
cans, hollow blocks;
C. You hammer things to make them visually
beautiful like hammering nails into wood to change
their appearances;
SOLID MATERIALS CAN
BE CHANGED IN MANY
WAYS SUCH AS BENDING,
CUTTING,
PRESSING OR
SUCH AS ACTIONS MAY
CHANGED THE MATERIAL'S
SIZE, SHAPE
AND TEXTURE BUT NO NEW
MATERIAL IS FORMED.
Direction: Read each statement carefully. Write TRUE if it tells a fact
about solid and FALSE if it is not. Write your answers on your answer
sheet. The first one is done for you.
TRUE 1. Solid materials change in size and shape when they are bent.
_____ 2.The size, shape and texture of materials change when
materials are cut.
_____ 3. A banana when pressed changes in size, shape and texture.
_____ 4. A twig becomes shorter when it is cut.
_____ 5. When a piece of paper is cut, the size becomes smaller or
shorter all the time.
_____ 6. Hammering may change the size and shape of materials.
Direction: Describe the different changes that take place
in solids when they are bent, pressed, hammered or cut by
completing the statements.
1.Solid materials when bent change in _______ and
______.
2.Solid materials when cut change in _____ and _______.
3. Solid materials when pressed change in ______and
____.
4. Solid materials when hammered change in ______ and
_____.
5. Materials change. All materials but no _________ is
WHAT I CAN DO
I am very sure the activities challenged you but I am
sure you did enjoy. Now read the situation below and
do what it asks you to do.
Your mother went to the market to buy things.
When she came home she asked you to cook viand
for lunch. She asked you to cook ginisang ulam using
the vegetables and meat below.
WHAT I CAN DO
Complete the step by step procedure by filling in
the blanks. Choose your answer from the words
in the parenthesis.
WHAT I CAN DO
How to cook ginisang gulay: A step by step procedure
1. I will (bend, press) the garlic then (cut, hammer) them into tiny
bits.
2. I will (cut, hammer) the onions into small pieces.
3. I will (cut, press) the pechay into four and the cabbage into small
sizes and set aside.
4. I will (cut, bend) the meat into bite sizes.
5. I will put the garlic into the pan with oil. Then the onions until they
are brown. Put the meat and wait until the meat turns brown then
put the vegetables. Add salt and wait for 5 minutes. Serve while hot.
