STRUCTURAL MEASURES
Any physical construction to reduce or avoid possible impacts of hazards or application
of engineering techniques to hazard resistance and resilience in structure or system.

Common structural measures for DRR include,

 Dams,

 Flood levies,

 Ocean wave barriers,

 Earthquake resistance construction and

 Evacuation shelter
NON STRUCTURAL MEASURES
Any measures not involving physical construction that use knowledge, practice or agreement to
reduce risk and impacts, particularly through the policies and laws, public awareness, raising,
training and education.

Common structural measures for DRR include

• Building codes,

• Land use planning laws and enforcement,

• Research and assessment, information resources

• Public awareness programs.

FLOOD
Structural Mitigation
 Construction, maintenances and protection of flood
control structures like embankments, ring bunds, etc.
 Dams and levees can also be constructed which can used
as temporarily storing spaces which reduce the chances of
lower plains getting flooded.
Non Structural Mitigation
 Well maintained boats to be made available at all time
 Harvest flood friendly crops before the onset of monsoon
flood season
 Awareness on flood proof habitat planning with long term
goal of flood plain zoning and rehabilitating all to safer
zone

 Important buildings and residences must be constructed

on an elevated area, stilts and platforms

 Construct of seed bank and tube wells on higher ground

EARTHQUAKE
Structural mitigation
 Buildings must conform to
earthquake resilient features(BIS
codes)
 Building byes laws applicable to the
specific earthquake zone of the
region should be followed
Non structural Mitigation
 Awareness on building bye laws applicable for specific
earthquake zone of the region should be followed.
 Policy decisions about construction of structures with
due approval from specified authorities have o be taken.
 Formulates and amend building codes that are
appropriately detailed with properly stated legal
implications
 Formulate guidelines both earthquake resistant
construction as well as for retrofitting
 Capacity building initiatives for architect, Engineers
and masons on safe construction practices
DROUGHT
Structural Mitigation
 Construction of irrigation channels.
 Clean existing ponds to be cleaned and more
ponds to be dug as part of MGNREGA activities
in village.
 Sluice gate to be linked with ponds
 Tube wells and bore well to be build in villages
 Construction and maintenance of grain banks on
safer location

 Promotion and support rainwater
harvesting
 Awareness on judicious use of water
resources
 Promote drought resistance crops
 Undertake food for work programs
