Government Policies

on
Science and Technology
Is there a need in our government
(Philippine government) to
introduce and implement programs,
projects, and policies to boost the
area of science and technology?
Why or why not?
In order to prepare the whole country and
its people to meet the demands of a
technologically driven; and

 capacitate the people to live in a world

driven by science.
 In response to the ASEAN Agenda, the
government, particularly the Department of
Science and Technology (DOST), has sought the
expertise of the National Research Council of the
Philippines (NCRP) to consult various sectors in
the society to study how the Philippines can
prepare itself in meeting the ASEAN Goals.

 As a result of the consultation, the NCRP is

expected to recommend policies and programs
that will improve the competitiveness of the
Philippines in the ASEAN Region.
The NRCP clustered these policies into (4) four,
namely:

Social Sciences, Humanities, Education,

International Policies and Governance

Physics, Engineering and Industrial Research,

Earth and Space Sciences, and Mathematics

Medical, Chemical, and Pharmaceutical

Sciences

Biological Sciences, Agriculture, and Forestry

Existing programs supported by the Philippine government
through the DOST:
 Providing funds for basic research and patents related to
science and technology.
 Providing scholarships for undergraduate and graduate
studies of students in the field of science and technology.
 Establishing more branches of the Philippine Science
High School System for training young Filipinos in the
field of Science and Technology.
 Creating science and technology parks
 Balik Scientist Program
 Developing science and technology parks in academic
campuses to encourage academe and industry
partnerships.
 The establishment of the National Science Complex and
National Engineering Complex within the University of the
Philippines campus in Dilliman.
The Philippine-American Academy of Science and
Engineering (PAASE) identified several capacity-
building programs such as:
Establishment of national centers of excellence.

Manpower and institutional development

programs.

Establishment of regional research centers.

Establishment of science and technology

business centers.

Strengthen science education.

THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE EDUCATION

Understanding science implies developing

and applying science-process skills and
using science literacy in understanding the
natural world and activities in everyday life.
 High Tide and Low Tide

High tides and low tides are

caused by the moon. The
moon's gravitational pull
generates something called
the tidal force. The tidal
force causes Earth—and its
water—to bulge out on the
side closest to the moon and
the side farthest from the
moon. These bulges of water
are high tides.
 Thermal Expansion
Thermal expansion is
the tendency of matter
to change its shape,
area, and volume in
response to a change
in temperature.
Temperature is a
monotonic function of
the average molecular
kinetic energy of a
substance. When a
substance is heated,
the kinetic energy of its
molecules increases.
 Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide a
compound made up of
two hydrogen atoms and
two oxygen atoms, begins
to breaks apart as soon
as it contacts blood,
creating that stinging
sizzle. This is because
blood and most living cells
contain the enzyme
catalase, which attacks
hydrogen peroxide and
converts it into water
(H2O) and oxygen (O2)
 Producing Ethanol by Fermentation

C6H12O6 → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2

Ethanol fermentation, also

called alcoholic fermentation,
is a biological process which
converts sugars such as
glucose, fructose, and
sucrose into cellular energy,
producing ethanol and carbon
dioxide as by-products.
 Doppler’s Effect
 Battery
 Car Seat-belts
 Crush
ASSIGNMENT:

Identify several Filipino scientists. Research

on their contributions in the field of science.
Examine what made them pursue a career in
science. Present the result of your work next
meeting.
