Single Vision Lenses

Single vision glasses are designed to help people who require

correction of farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism.
These eyeglasses have just a single optical prescription
correction and they distribute focus evenly over the entire
surface area of the lens.
BIFOCAL LENSES
4. SPLIT BIFOCAL

 Bifocals really were invented by Benjamin

Franklin(23 May 1785).
 The split lens is the Franklin type bifocal with
a lens above(distance power) and below(near
power) cut along a straight line and joined in a
frame.
3. CEMENTED BIFOCAL
 Also invented by Morick.
 According to the prescription
On the additional power made on D
The flint lens which is known as
N
“Wafer”.
 A thin “Wafer” glass with same RI(Refractive Index)
as the major lens was cemented on the back surface
of the major lens by the help of “Canada
balsam”(glue).
 We can remove or replace “Wafer” by a new
prescription power when required.
ADVANTAGES:
 Cosmetically more appealing
 Less optical aberration.
 Patients with low vision who need high add
power(+20 D)
DISADVANTAGES:
 Dividing line tends to collect dirt
 Adherence of wafer is affected by changes in
temperature.
 Wafer had a tendency to fall off .
2. SOLID BIFOCAL
DISADVANTAGES:
 More prismatic effect.
 Limited surface power.
 Aberration for distance power.
 Restricted field of vision in for distance.
 Image jump.
 Optical center cannot be easily centered.
1. FUSED BIFOCAL
FUSED KRYPTOK BIFOCAL:
.Developed by the :John Borsch Jr. in the year
1908.
During the manufacturing process a round
countersink cavity(flint lens) was ground and
polished on the front surface of the major
lens(crown lens).
Heat apply 600 to 700 degree centigrade.
ADVANTAGES:
Segments edges don’t collect dust .
Segments don’t fall out become discolored or
chip.
Can be produce in large quantities at low cost.
It’s relatively light.
DISADVANTAGES:
Image jump.
Head tilt
Low field of vision
D- BIFOCAL
 1st introduced by the “UNIVIS” company in 1926.
 When its fused in “B/E” shaped is called “B/E”
bifocal.
ADVANTAGES:
 Less image jump
 Less optical aberration
 More field view
 Lighter
DISADVANTAGES:
 Reduce the reading area.
 The dividing line creates problems
e.g: while climbing stairs.
