whether the ship was unsinkable
The RMS Titanic was the biggest moveable
man-made object of her day. However, its
selling point was about the grandeur and
luxury, NOT its safety.

Most of the articles and advertisements for the Titanic focused on its size and
accommodations, NOT on the design’s details
Also, the affluent passengers who boarded the ship chose it for its prestige
and comfort.

It set off on its maiden voyage on 10th April 1912.
On the night of 14–15 April, the Titanic hit an iceberg and
sadly sank, with great loss of life.
Unused Titanic ticket
This unused ticket to the Titanic's launch in 1911 is expected to sell for as
much as $70,000 at an auction on April 15, which is the 100th anniversary
of the ship's sinking.
DISASTE
Why Was It Such a Disaster?
There are many theories about why so many people died.
ICEBERG
An iceberg is a really big piece of ice floating in the sea.
Icebergs can be bigger than houses.
Most of an iceberg can’t be seen because it is under water.

ICEFIELD
Captain Smith thought he avoided the ice field by sailing slightly south than the
reported ice sightings.
Therefore, he didn’t slow the ship down when it was actually in the ice field

Lifeboats are little boats put onboard a ship. If the ship gets into problems,
passengers can get into lifeboats and sail away.

Lifeboats
This is one of the major factors of the disaster:
• There were not enough lifeboats on board to hold all the passengers and
crew.
• There were 20 lifeboats, enough for 1178 people, but there were over 2000
people on the boat.
• When the 1st lifeboats were launched at 12:45 (60 minutes after the hit) ,
they were not full.
• Originally 48 lifeboats were supposed to be on Titanic, but it was reduced to
20 because they felt it too cluttered.
• Titanic also carried 3500 lifebelts and 48 life rings , but these were useless
in the icy water.
• Most people did not drown but froze to death.
• Lots of people thought that the call to the lifeboats was a drill so stayed
inside rather than entering the boat

WHO SHOULD BE
RESPONSIBLE?
J. Bruce Ismaay Captain Smith Captain Lord
WHY DIDN’T HE SLOW THE SHIP
DOWN?

Captain Smith

Captain Smith was the ship’s captain.

This voyage was his last as he was retiring. He
ignored seven iceberg warnings and kept the ship
going at its top speed
-> If he had slowed Titanic down the disaster
would not have happened.
DID HE FORCE THE CAPTAIN
TO SPEED UP?
J. Bruce Ismay

Joseph Bruce Ismay was the chairman and

managing director of the White Star Line.
He wanted to show that Titanic could make a
six-day journey. To meet this schedule, the
Titanic couldn’t slow down. It is believed
Ismay put pressure on Captain Smith to
maintain the ship’s speed.
The infamous coward of the Titanic !?
At 1:40 a.m. on April 15, 1912, the chairman of the White Star Line, with slippers
on his feet, stepped into the last lifeboat to leave

Should he brand him as a coward?

Or he just did what anyone else would've done
The infamous coward of the Titanic !?
He was ushering women Nobody deserves to live
and children into more than ourselves. We are
lifeboats. He waited until all noble person
the very last lifeboat to
get in, and he was the last
one to get on. Where is the gender
equality?

cost any woman or
child their life
Dying for honor is just dumb

Even though he wanted more speed, the captain makes

that choice, Captain Smith holds that blame.
Would you give up
your seat on a
lifeboat for a woman/child?
3.5->4 hours
RMS Carpathia
WHY DIDN’T IT HELP?
Captain Lord’s fault

Captain Lord was the Californian’s captain. He turned off the

radio at around 11.15, so they didn’t get the distress message.
The crew saw rockets from the Titanic and told him, but he
concluded that the Titanic was having a party.
The Californian did not help.

-> If the Californian had turned on the radio, the distress

message would have been heard, and the Californian would
have reached the Titanic in time to save the passengers
THIRD
CONDITION
If he had slowed Titanic down the disaster would
not have happened.

If the Californian had turned on the radio, the

distress message would have been heard, and the
Californian would have reached the Titanic in
time to save the passengers
IF [had + Ved/V3], … would (not) have + Ved/V3

1. If the Titanic had not left (not leave) Ireland, it would not have sunk (not sink).

2. If the Titanic (travel) slowly, it (miss) the iceberg.

3. If the captain (listen) to the warnings, he (be) more careful.

4. If the lookouts (see) the iceberg earlier, they (tell) the captain in time to save the ship.

5. If the Titanic (not hit) the iceberg, it (not sink).

6. If there (be) more lifeboats, fewer people (die).

7. If the Titanic (not sink), it (arrive) in New York
