Electrochemistry: is the study of chemical reactions that produce electrical effects, and of the chemical

phenomena that are caused by the action of external electric effect.

Applications:
• Batteries
• Fuel cells
• Electroplating
• Electrosynthesis (Chlorine, Caustic Soda, Aluminum, ...
• Corrosion prevention
• Water treatment
• 5.1. Oxidation and Reduction (Redox reactions):

• The most convenient definition is that oxidation involves the loss of electrons
while reduction involves the gain of electrons. In all cases they are
simultaneous processes.
• The very simple reaction of Daniel cell:
• Zn + Cu ++ Cu + Zn ++ (1)
• Can be expressed as follow:
• Zn  Zn ++ + 2ē oxidation (2)
• Cu++ + 2ē  Cu reduction (3)
