DIFFERENT METHODS

OF MASS TIMBER
SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
Joining is the stage where your project
starts coming together connecting the
various parts of your work piece.
Mass timber uses state of the art
technology to glue, nail or dowel wood
products together in layers. The results
are large structural panels, posts and
beams. These exceptionally strong and
versatile products are known as mass
timber.
METHODS
1: CLT (CROSS LAMINATED
TIMBER)
CLT consists of layers of kiln-dried
dimension lumber (usually three, five, seven
or nine) oriented at right angles to one
another and then glued to form structural
panels. By gluing layers of wood at right
angles, the panel delivers excellent structural
rigidity in both directions. This method is
widely used in Pakistan this methods is
known for its strength and durability.
Advantages: Strength, fire resistance, design
flexibility.
Disadvantages: Limited availability, high
cost.
2: DLT (DOWEL LAMINATED
TIMBER)
DLT is a mass timber panel product
created by stacking dimension lumber
together on its edge (left) or cross
laminating them (right), fit together with
hardwood dowels..
Advantages Strong & durable,
sustainable.
Disadvantages limited availability,
higher cost, moisture susceptibility.
3: GLT (GLUE LAMINATED
TIMBER)
GLT is composed of wood laminations
bonded together with durable, moisture-
resistant adhesives. The grain of all
laminations runs parallel with the length
of the wood member.
Advantages: Strength, durability,
architectural possibilities.
Disadvantages: Limited availability of
large sizes, susceptibility to moisture.
4: NLT (NAIL LAMINATED
TIMBER)
Nail laminated timber (NLT) is another
commonly used mass timber system
worldwide. NLT offers versatility and a
unique aesthetic NLT is made
of dimension lumber stacked together on
its edge and fastened together with nails
or sometimes screws to form a solid
structural element.
Advantages: Versatility, unique
aesthetic, cost-effective.
Disadvantages: Limited span
capabilities, requires skilled labor.
5: LVL (LAMINATED VENEER
LUMBER)
LVL is part of a family of products,
structural composite lumber (SCL), that
are made of dried and graded wood
veneers, strands or flakes that are layered
upon one another and bonded together
with a moisture resistant adhesive into
large blocks known as billets.
Advantages - High strength and
stiffness. Long-lasting durability.
Disadvantages of LVL:- Limited
availability. Higher cost. Requires skilled
labor.
