Visible Light

By Arhaan
What is visible light ?

The visible light spectrum

is the segment of the
electromagnetic spectrum
that the human eye can
view.
What does is consist of?

The visible light spectrum consists of 7 colours that

are red, violet, orange,yellow,green,blue,indigo. If
you take any one color, it will have one frequency
and so is called monochromatic light. Out of all
these colours Red has the highest wavelength (7 x
10^-7m) and Violet has the shortest wavelength (4 x
10^-4m). All the colours travel at the same speed
only in a vacuum but when there is a medium
change they travel at different speed and are
refracted by different amount.
Applications of Visible Light

It’s used for illumination and photography. Cameras and

optical instruments from microscopes to telescopes use the
properties of light to form images of near and distant objects.
It also helps the plants in photosynthesis.
The wave equation

V=fλ, helps us calculate the velocity of a wave by multiplying it’s

frequency and wavelength. For example:
The wavelength of a beam of light travelling in air is 5 x 10^-7m
calculate its frequency.
Just rearrange the equation to f=v/λ and since speed of light in air is 3
x 10^8
f= 6 x 10^14
Questions

Q1) The wavelength of a beam of light in air is 6 x 10^-7m.

Q2) The frequency of a beam of infrared radiation is in air is 4 x
10^14m. Calculate its wavelength.
