RANGE

The range is the difference

between the highest and lowest
values in a set of numbers. To
find it, subtract the lowest
number in the distribution from
the highest.
RANGE = HIGHEST
NUMBER – LOWEST
NUMBER
EXAMPLE 1
Find the range of the following set of numbers:
a) 23, 27, 40, 18, 25
b)25, 26, 57, 15, 47

a) The largest value is 40 and the smallest value is 18. Therefore, the
range is 40 − 18 = 22.
b) The largest value is 57 and the smallest value is 15. Therefore, the
range is 57 − 15 = 42.
EXAMPLE 2
Finding the range for an ordered list of numbers

Work out the range of this set of numbers

1, 3, 4, 11, 13, 14 , 18

1. Identify the highest value.

The highest value is 18.

2. Identify the lowest value.

The lowest value is 1.

3. Subtract the lowest value from the highest value.

Range = highest value − lowest value 18 − 1 = 17

The range is 17.
EXAMPLE 3
Finding the highest value
The range of a set of data is 12.
The lowest value is 25.
Work out the highest value.
To find the highest value we will need to add the range to the lowest
value.
Highest value 12 + 25 = 37
The highest value is 37.
This answer can be doubled checked:
Range = highest value − lowest value = 37 − 12 = 25
EXAMPLE 4
Finding the lowest value
The range of a set of data is 8.
The highest value is 14.
Work out the lowest value.
To find the lowest value we will need to subtract the range from the
highest value.
Lowest value 14 − 8 = 6
The lowest value is 6.
This answer can be doubled checked:
Range = highest value − lowest value = 14 − 6 = 8
