Speech styles
• According to Martin  Intimate
Joos, speech style  Casual
means the form of  Consultative
language that the
 Formal
speaker uses, which
characterized by the  Frozen
degree of formaty. He
identified the styles
in five classes:
Intimate speech
• This style is used in
conversations
between people who
are very close and
know each other quite
well, because having
maximum of shared
background
information.
Casual speech
• This style is used in
conversations
between friends and
insiders who have
something to share.
• For example: girls are
talking about their
dresses.
Consultative speech
• It is basically
unplanned speech
since the speaker uses
the participation of
the listener.
• For example,
consultant gives
advice to client in the
market.
Formal speech
• This type of speech
used formal word and
expression. Formal
speech should be
presented in complete
sentences with
specific word usage.
• Foe example:
applying for a job.
Frozen speech
• It is the most formal
communicative style
that is often use in
respectful situation
or formal ceremony.
• For example: the final
day of university or
wedding day.
