(SPANISH PERIOD)

PRE-COLONIAL ERA
• the Philippines had a rich cultural history, engaging in
trade with China, Japan, and Islamic leaders.
• The original religion of early Filipinos was Animism,
which involved the worship of spirits.
• The Philippines already had their own literature
before the Spaniards arrived: These literary works are
in the form of oral consisting of epics, legends, songs,
riddles, and proverbs.
THE BEGINNING OF
SPANISH COLONIZATION
(1565-1898)
Spanish colonization began in 1521 when explorer Ferdinand
Magellan claimed the islands for the Spanish empire.
The first recorded visit by Europeans is Ferdinand Magellan's
expedition who landed in Homonhon island, now part of
Guiuan, eastern Samar on march 17, 1521.

• Glory - Establishment of Spanish supremacy over
Portugal
