4.1 Extreme Values of Functions
on Closed Intervals

This section shows how to locate and identify extreme (maximum or minimum) values of a
function from its derivative.
Once we can do this, we can solve a variety of optimization problems.
The domains of the functions we consider are intervals or unions of separate intervals.

For now we can find the absolute maxima and the absolute minima of a function
on a finite closed interval by comparing the values of the function at its critical
points and at the endpoints of the interval.

For a differentiable function, these are the only points where the extrema have
the potential to occur.
