ARGUMENTS AND CONVEY EMOTION

Teague, Jailyn, Aiden, Savannah

THE POWER OF VISUAL
ARGUMENTS: OVERVIEW

• A lot of visuals we encounter today are on screens

• Visuals have been used to convey messages throughout human
history
• Starting all the way back when the pharaohs of Egypt lined the
banks of the Nile with statues to assert authority
• The internet exposes people to mass amounts of visual arguments
everyday
• Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube
• More than 50 years prior to the internet, Marshall McLuhan said
"the medium is massage" “We shape our tools and after words our
tools shape us. All media works us over completely”
• This is exemplified by the Lo and Behold poster
HOW CAN WE USE VISUALS IN OUR
ARGUMENTS?

• Many assignments in school require or encourage the use of visuals

• It's important to know how to incorporate visuals correctly
• Make the use of visuals inclusive
• Describing the visual to someone who is unable to properly see it
• Description should be informative.
VISUALS TO INFLICT EMOTIONS

• Visuals are very effective at conveying emotion

• Using images and visual design can create pathos
• Images are used by many to invoke emotions
• through the use of ads, YouTube videos, pollical posters, rallies, marches
• Technology makes it easy and accessible to create on the spot visuals to be used in an argument
• Photos have the ability to show things that words sometimes cannot
• useful in advertisements to get the point across as quickly and effective as possible
• Ultimately it is up to you “generate impressions that support your arguments” (p.355).
• Every image you use should advance your goal
COLORS AND VISUALS

• Photos can draw lots of emotion and can become part of an argument about
whatever the photo is conveying.
• pictures of wildlife could be used to argue the need to preserve nature.
• Color contrast has the ability to powerfully convey messages.
• Yellow letters on a white background is hard to see; the message is harder to get
across.
• Color is very important in visual arguments
• our minds associate colors with feelings which can be used to encourage someone to
buy a product, join a cause, and so on.
EXAMPLE : ZELDA COVER

2017 Zelda Game: Uses colors

like green and blue in order to
symbolize adventure and
exploration of the natural
world

When choosing colors/text, it

is important to make your
1992 Cover of Zelda image memorable, so that it
Simple is recognizable
Vivid colors: red dominates, signaling strength and
adventure; the gold background and the gold-
emblazoned shield and sword suggest fantasy.
