The Dick and Carey

Model
Elizabeth Hasse
• Also known as the Dick and Carey Instructional
Design Model or the Systems Approach Model
• Widely used in the field of education and
instructional design
• Used to create effective and efficient
Background instructional material and courses.
• Based on several key principles
• Recognizes that instructional design is an iterative
process

(Dick, 1996)
• The Dick and Carey Model was developed in
the early 1970s by Walter Dick and Lou Carey
• Created in response to the need for a
systematic and structured approach to
instructional design
• Key principles published in an influential book
titled “The Systematic Design of Instruction,”
History first published in 1978
• Gained widespread acceptance and became a
foundational framework in the field of
instructional design.
• Remains a relevant and widely used
instructional design framework
(Birgili, 2019)
• K-12 Education (Lee & Lee, n.d.)
Frequent • Higher Education (Lee & Lee, n.d.)
Use’s • Corporate Training (Linkedin, n.d.)
• Healthcare Education (Jabaay, 2020)
