Statement of Purpose:

The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of patient – controlled

and nurse – administered analgesia for controlling pain in patients with
terminal stage cancer.

Research Question: What is the relative effectiveness of patient – controlled

analgesia versus nurse – controlled analgesia with regard to a. medication
consumption, b. control of pain in patients with terminal cancer?

of the Study

Definition of Terms
Purpose of the Study
- states the justification, reasons, motivations or the rationale for the study by
presenting its overall goals and objectives.
- the statement of purpose is in declarative form and uses words such as
purpose, goal, aim, intent or objective.
- it should also include a declaration of what the study does not intend to cover,
research delimitation
In Quantitative Studies:
- independent variable
- dependent variable
- population of the study
Example: The purpose of this study is to determine whether viewing a video of
an actual delivery of a baby will reduce the level of parental anxiety.
Statement of the Problem
• Level 1: What is the profile of the respondents in terms of (intervening
variable)?
• Level 2: What is the extent of the variables (independent variables)?
• Level 3: What is the extent of the variables (dependent variables)?
• Level 4: Is there a significant difference between the extent of Level 1 and
Level 2?
• Level 5: Is there a significant difference between the extent of Level 2 and
Level 3?
• Level 6: Is there a significant relationship between Level 2 and 3?
• Level 7: Prediction: Do the extent of Level 1 and 2 predict the extent of Level
3?
Specifically, the study will answer the following:
1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of:
• Age
• Sex
• other information on the profile of the respondents
2. What is the Level of Knowledge of the LGBTQIA+ community, in terms of:
a.
b.
c. ?
3. What is the perception of the LGBTQIA+ community on the HIV/AIDS prevention and
control, in term of?
a.
b. ?
4. Is there a significant difference between the profile of the respondents and the level of
knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention and control?
5. Is there a significant difference between the level of knowledge and the perception of
LGBTQIA+ community on the HIV/AIDS prevention and control?
Example: Research Objective/Objective of
the Study
The main objective of the study is to determine the (Independent
variable) of (Population) on the (Dependent Variable).

“The main objective of the study is to determine the levels of

perception of mothers on facility and non-facility based delivery.”
“The purpose of the study is to determine the level of knowledge of
LGBTQIA+ community on the HIV prevention and control and their
intent to use.”
Specifically, the study aims to achieve the
following:
1. To identify the profile of respondents in terms of:
• Age
• Sex
• other information on the profile of the respondents
2. To determine the Level of Knowledge of the LGBTQIA+ community, in terms of:
a.
b.
3. To determine the perception of the LGBTQIA+ community on the HIV/AIDS prevention and
control, in term of
a.
b.
4. To determine the significant difference between the profile of the respondents and the level of
knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention and control?
5. To determine the significant difference between the level of knowledge and the perception of
LGBTQIA+ community on the HIV/AIDS prevention and control?

Definition of
Terms
Scope and Limitations of the Study
• The scope of the study defines the boundaries of the inquiry.
• Delimitations are the characteristics that limit the scope of the investigation.
• Specific constraints:
- choice of objectives or purpose of the study
- choice of study questions
- choice of variables of interest
- choice of the samples and the exclusion of other sectors of the population
- anticipated manageability of the study problems
- Theoretical perspectives.
Example:
”The effect of separation anxiety on hospitalized toddler…”
Limitations of the study – characteristics of design or methodology that
set parameters on the application or interpretation of the results of the
study.

1. What will be the general idea of the study to be conducted?

2. Who will be the respondents of the study, characteristics of the
respondents?
3. What will be the coverage and scope of the study?
4. When will it be conducted?

Definition of
Terms
2 Types of Definitions:
a. Conceptual Definition – the abstract or
theoretical meaning of the concepts under
study (Polit & Beck, 2017).
- the general or universal meaning of terms
understood by all and usually sourced from the
Definition of dictionary.
Terms: b. Operational Definition – the researcher’s own
definition, which is made for clarity of
meaning and prevention of misunderstanding
or misinterpretation. Although it is
formulated by the researcher, it must still
adhere to conceptual definitions.
