X-RAYS AND

GAMMA RAYS
By: Chloe, Safiya and Hana
INTRODUCTION
X-RAYS GAMMA RAYS
X-Rays are part of the Gamma rays have a wavelength range
electromagnetic spectrum below 100 pm and frequencies greater
having wavelengths in the than 10 Hz. They are the most
range between 0.01 nm to 10 energetic form of electromagnetic
nm and they have a frequency radiation in a range greater than 100
range between 30 PHz keV (electronvolts).
(petahertz) to 30 EHz
(exahertz)
Common properties of
• Both these waves are Transverse waves that
transfer energy from the source of the both X-RAYS AND
waves to an absorber.
• They both have higher energy, shorter
GAMMA RAYS
wavelength and high frequencies compared
to the other rays on the EM spectrum.
• Just like all other rays on the EM spectrum,
the speed of EM waves in air and in a
vacuum is 3.0 × 10^8 m/s
USES OF X-RAYS
X-rays can be used in a variety of
situations. For example,
• doctors can use an X-ray machine to
take pictures of our bones or teeth.
• Airport security personnel use it to
check and inspect luggage.
• Hot gas in the universe also emits X-
rays.
USES OF Gamma rays
It has a wide range of applications in the
medical field.
• Gamma-ray imaging allows us to look
inside the body.
• *The universe is the largest generator
of gamma rays in existence.*
